While French cars are generally cool, you'd look like an absolute plonker in one of these.

I would give it a cool, but the particular segment of Top Gear it was featured in was the straw that broke the camel's back for me in terms of the show's believability. This makes it uncool.

On the episodes where they tried to modify it to be faster than an Evo they thought bigger brakes would help on road tires.

Hur durr.

French cars are usually cool, but its a minivan with two doors. Two. Why the hell does anyone need a two door minivan? It seems like it's trying to be something it isn't. Uncool.

I enjoyed Top Gear right up until Scriptchard Hammond said, "Formula One cars have wings, Formula One cars go fast!"

Finish. End of. Playing us for morons. Became a self-aware charicature after that, for me.

I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

The coolest car ever made?

Not quite, but getting there.

Style: 3-door coupé

A very interesting, quirky and unusual French coupé that was a commercial flop.

Probably the coolest coupé in existence, but it's still a coupé.

sub zero.

Ugly coupé.

If it looks like a coupé then you're still going to look like a coupé driver.

The rear half looks like there was a huge fight amongst the design team whether or not to make a coupé or a coupé.

It doesn't re-invent coupés
Seriously uncool

A decent looking coupé.

Fixed.

As outré as it is cool. So that makes it a very high cool from me.

Also, Children of Men, anyone?

Upper cool from me. The world was just not quite ready for this. An MPV with a lot of trappings of a regular cruiser. Also I am weird in that I like dat ass, liked the Megane when it had it too.

I don't think that the world 'isn't ready' for a luxury car in a minivan body - they obviously just think that it's not an attractive concept. People also haven't wanted a luxury French car for a number of decades now either.

This came out first to set the design of Renault at that time... then the Megane came out with this design transposed to it.. ;)

True that a French luxury car hasnt really existed for decades now, and the french knew that was the problem.

They are not making the effort of designing one properly either... in a traditional sense of it.

But the Avantime was really their greatest and latest philosophical effort at redefining affordable luxury

If i remember, Renault definition of the Avantime was that a coupe (2 door) doesnt have to be small, tight and unconfortable!

It wanted to have a coupe that transpires luxury and space, space for 2 or four adults.

The shape of the car is the results of findings that people who are rich do not need to move fast, but rather in ride high and in style, in a car that doesnt look common...

Nowadays you see a lot of poeple driving in CUV and SUV under the pretense that they need that utility and off road capability... but

The fact is that most peope isnt using at all..

It's a coupé grand tourer. Trust me. They actually sold it here. (Noting how most people insisting it's an MPV or "minivan" don't come from markets where the Avantime was sold and are therefore unlikely to have ever encountered one in real life.)

Whatever this is...

The Avantime should be considered as "cool" because of the following:
- because everyone think it is uncool, therefore it is cool
- because most of us have not a single clue of what this is, therefore it is cool
- because it is undesirable, therefore it is cool
(If this was so desirable, it would have been uncool)
- because it was sold in such small number (due to the above reasons), therefore it is cool
- because it is a french car made by the french for the french that even the french dont like, therefore it is cool

*alarm noises* Hipster detected! Hipster detected!

The "everyone thinks it's uncool, therefore it is cool" thing didn't seem to work when my own car was polled. Maybe I should've said that then.

Yes, but everyone thinks your car is uncool because it is actually uncool. And it's not a french car that's not a Peugeot that wasn't designed by Pininfarina. And it's built by GM and isn't a C1 or C2 'vette.

It's not a Hipster car nor a car for Hipsters. It's got no retro pretensions and it genuinely doesn't care about what anyone else thinks, contrary to a hipster that thinks he's living in the 40s and says he doesn't hare what others think about him to hide the fact he lives solely for what others think about him.

Also, your car is uncool beyond any kind of logic.

A car is cool either by association with cool people, or if many (not entirely uncool) people think they're cool. Coolness is a consensual thing. You can't claim it for yourself... and it doesn't exist as a concept in a vacuum.

There are people who think the Avantime is daft. But also a lot of people, many of them cool, who think it's cool.

So far as I know, not many people think an old Sunfire is cool. Though they do exist.

That's why we have a Cool Wall... to find out where on the continuum particular cars fall. While I disagree with some of the results, I don't get to define coolness, so I've got to accept them.

Uncool, it's not seriously uncool because it's not nearly as bad as past attempts.
