Never been really a fan of these, always thought they looked a bit bland from factory. A nice car though. 👍 Cool.
 
While not a fan of them personally, it's certainly a cool car in my book.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I don't really like this generation, but they still are cooler than a normal Golf.
 
European hatchback = cool.

Except it's German. And the really boring choice for a European hatchback buyer. I think I might have to go with "Meh".
 
It wasn't the kind of hot hatch people lusted over, although the Mk5 GTi was a respectable motor.

But while it seemed like the the default choice for someone wanting a hatchback with more poke than usual and more upmarket than a Focus ST, it was this GTi that made up for the diluted Mk4 offering without being overly brash. Cool.

Reliable, economical, practical,...the list goes on but none of the accolades add up to anything more than "Meh"
 
Cool, but not sub, because i know people that own this. My dad was about to get one too.
 
@Famine hit the nail in the head. Despite being very good it's also very boring. Meh.
 
Cool. It's not overstated or outlandish and it's unique enough where the average person might see it as a little more than just a Golf. It also can be bought with plaid seats and I think that's cool, despite a whiff of hipster.
 
Is it good? Yes. Is it practical? Yes. Is it exciting? Despite it's status as a hot hatch, it's the most boring hot hatch. The kind that goes quickly, but doesn't look it, or really sound it. For that, it's a 'Meh'.

Plus it screams 'Company Car' in my head for some reason.
 
Meh. Nothing even remotely interesting.

And hatches are all ugly. Most of the time.

Don't care for hatchbacks. Although this one isn't necessarily bad, I've found VW owners usually are D-bags.
 
Meh. The Mk1 and Mk2 GTI were the default hot hatch choices in the past, whereas this was in the middle of a hugely crowded hot hatch market. Plus, the tartan seats look tacky.
 
Borderline. But since I won't vote "meh", I've gone for uncool.

The latest GTI is a cool car (because Golf GTIs always have that instant appeal - not one I personally subscribe to, but it's there), and earlier ones are too. But these are in limbo at the moment, affordable enough that yobs can buy them cheaply and drive them like arses, and everyone else puts daft wheels on them for "stance" reasons.

Those factors aside, it's one of the least-attractive GTIs for me too - I've always found the styling a bit blobby, and they're fairly indistinct on the road. Subtlety has always been a Golf GTI thing, but in this case it's not different enough from the unattractive standard model to give it that real appeal of a cool hot hatch.
 
Definitely cool. Understated but attractive styling still looks good, the drive is excellent, and it's quite subtle.
 
Manual Transmission, and the closest thing Volkswagen has to a sports car other than the Golf R. Cool, but only just. I'd say SZ if I lived in Europe, but I don't.
 
Cool because its styling isn't over complicated with random curvy body lines going in multiple directions.

-Personally, I love hatchbacks
-Looks good without being flamboyant about it
-Those plaid seats

This. There are a lot of truly awful aftermarket trends around these cars. :yuck:

Gets a solid Cool from me.
 
Borderline cool frome me. It's a bit "meh"-ish since it's barely noticeable compared to the average Golf, but that can be a pro. Small city cars with a good punch are always cool as well.
 
Upper meh from me, good solid and quick cars but just not special enough. A Mk 1 or (at a push) Mk 2 I would give a solid cool, for classical/historical interest. Also R32 for being a nifty sleeper.
 
It's a Golf that isn't a Mk1 or Mk2, uncool. It oozes 'meh' which makes it uncool for me ( if you get my logic)
 
I liked it when I was 16. Doesn't interest me anymore. Meh.
 
Barely made it to cool, the Mk4 would have barely made it to meh.
