Subzero  Because epic look & incredible power and performance 👍

A solid cool. I was in love with the car when Porsche first announced the project. The technology is impressive, and it really shows off how capable electric power can be. Sans-livery, it's quite a looker as well.

The enormous price tag and race livery (which is thankfully an option) keeps it from sub-zero.

Not true. It's incredibly relevant in European cities where emissions-related fees are in place. That 10 miles may be functionally dubious but its benefits under legislation are huge. Some cities, particularly those in Germany, are considering zero-emission centres - and cars like this can sneak into those quite happily. Even with only 10 miles or so of range..

If it's that relevant then Porsche are sorely neglecting their core consumer base, those that drive 911's, Boxsters, Caymans and Macans.

Either way, I went seriously uncool. Whatever claims Porsche try and make about being more efficient than the majority of compact cars don't wash with me - that's about as cool as getting off a rape charge on a technicality... It still falls down for me on many, many other levels. It looks great, but that's it.

Expensive technology. Makes sense to introduce it where money is no object.

That said, they do a plug-in Panamera these days too. Still not exactly cheap but you could buy about eight of them for the price of a 918, so it's all relative :D

Completely understandable. Though my own "cool" rating had nothing to do with its supposed efficiency.

I'm so glad you live so far away from civilization, so your mind-numbing rants about "being green" are contained to a land of frozen solitude. Not unlike your mind.

Makes me wonder what you think of the LF-A, as you seem to rant endlessly about tech with no understanding of when or how it is used.

As for the car, I'm giving it a cool. It just doesn't quite do it for me, despite being gorgeous and forward looking. Could just be the price...

I'm just glad he didn't make it political and blame the Nazi's for building this hybrid war machine of speed.

Efforts to boost power/economy with electric motors, even on a super car... I'm not seeing this issue here.

Cars like this costing more than half a million Sterling doesn't shock me as much as it used to. And while it's a hefty sum even for something like the 918, I think it just about gets a cool.

Pros (in my opinion):
~Body design. I like this one's lines, despite the (apparent) hood gap that cuts away from the flowy lines a bit.
~Mid-engine, all wheel drive.
~Torque numbers - that's astounding.

Cons (again IMO):
~Looks similar to the Ferrari 430 (don't know why... something about the front end just says that to me.)
~The turn signal indicators (if that's what those are); doesn't seem to blend well and sticks out like a sore thumb. Literally looks like a piece of the fender was cut out.
~Fake racing livery. Doesn't look right on this car.

I'm fine with the engine layout and the hybridity; stuff like that really isn't a concern for me (I'm more of a fan of balance at the moment.) The pros and cons really do balance it out for me, so I'll have to go with Meh for this one.

This livery stuff has to stop. That's like hating all Mustang's because someone in the hood put 22 inch rims on his.

I can't beleive there are people here saying it's uncool because it's a supercar and thus too shouty. Talk about right for the wrong reasons. It's the loudness and flashiness of supercars that makes them cool.

When have loud flashy people ever been cool?

We are talking about cars, OR people???

I've always thought that "the kind of people that drive X car are X" argument is BS... IMHO...

Flashy people buy flashy stuff. Flashy stuff bought by flashy people is uncool because flashy people are uncool.

Solid cool, It's those gaudy 1970's stripes that keep it from being sub-zero for me.

Good thing it's all subjective. ;)

Not really. 22 inch rims would've been put on after market. The livery on the 918 is a factory option.

I'd say it's cool. The livery is damn good. I've been a lifelong Porsche fan and this doesn't really feel like one to me, but it's still a nice car.

DK
Can someone other than W&N take over running the Cool Wall? His ignorance is painful.

Well as long as the math and organization is kept up to a good level then I'm fine with him doing it.

It just makes each thread more entertaining.

I love Porsches, but a roadgoing Porsche without three pedals in the footwell is Uncool. Not to mention the hybrid hypercars seem silly to me, like a high-speed, upper-class version of when Detroit started sticking meager battery packs and electric motors into pickup trucks just to slap on a "Hybrid" badge and net some sales/goodwill.

Agreed. Would have probably voted meh but it's at least cool for how butthurt people get about hybrid supercars.

I'll say it. I love this car.

As a closet Porsche fanatic, it presses all of my 911-loving buttons - Generic 911-ish looks, overdone interior with too many buttons, way too many options, and over-engineered to the point of where it is borderline boring.

But it doesn't matter. I like the fact Porsche went for the endurance side of the performance spectrum compared to the F1 influences taken by Ferrari and McLaren. I like the fact that it's technically better than the Carrera GT, but all of it depends on how you like your car. It starts counting with it's thumb, and doesn't care what those silly Italians, English and Americans do.

I give it a solid sub-zero. Even if I hate the silly green tint that the name badge has on the back.

Cool, combines economy with performance and that's okay with me. And it looks good. I don't understand the people who are saying the electric motors make it uncool. This is just the "future," guys.

Personally, it's not the electricity itself that makes it uncool. It's that the whole 918 thing exposes Porsche's sensitive, insecure, OCD underbelly.

"Ach du lieber! Our lightweight hybrid supercar does not have enough battery life to score infinite fuel economy on der NEDC test! Make it bigger!"

"But Herr Marketing Manager, that will make it slower on the Nurburgring!"

"Then change the lap test to make it faster!"

I mean, they accuse Nissan of rigging a lap to favor the GT-R, then they go around and do that.

Not that the lap times actually matter, anyway.

"Then change the lap test to make it faster!"

How did they do that? I watched the video and it seems that it's 7 minutes flat from GT4 startline to startline.

Get's a cool from me. One of the best looking Porsches in quite a long time. The technology in this car will go a long way in the automotive industry. It also proves a supercar can be more than just dinosaur burning rolling art.

Meh. Another "let's fill a non-existing gap in the market" special.

They supposedly started timing from a different spot. To maximize the amount of battery in the pack when they hit the parts where the power would matter most.

Rohrl said the car could do multiple sub-seven laps in a row. Could. Maybe. Whatever. All we know is that the batteries are fully charged at the start of a flying lap, and depleted at the end of one.

Still, fantastic machine. It's just the brand and that mentality of desperately needing to constantly one-up everyone else that kind of let it down.

Ah, I see.
