I can understand though, a lot of people don't like how the early A bodies look, even I didn't when I was first looking for Barracudas (I wanted a 67-69). It's really an acquired look for some people, but I would have mine over any 1970 426 hemi cuda any day now.

You certainly did not look at the Barracuda you have now and thought "Wow, that is a good looking car, that's why I want it."

Hell yes I did, I love how my car looks, every single inch of it. I even love the gold and white interior. Why the hell would I call it my dream car if I just said "meh, it looks alright I guess, I'll settle for it."

I wouldn't change a damn thing on it except for maybe some ansen aluminum slots, a 340, and some disc brakes.

I think a Mitsubishi Starion's pretty okay looking, and that's the car I really want...
 
So it comes down to this: No matter how innovative or awesome a car may be, if it is deemed "ugly" in any way (which is purely subjective), it is uncool? Extroverted cool people never drove Studebakers? Ok then.

I always hear from people how the American auto industry got to where it is now is because of so-called lack of innovation - platform sharing, "outdated" suspension, copying European carmakers' ideas, etc. Then I show them the likes of Studebaker, Tucker and Hudson, and joy of joys, they don't like them because they tried to be different. Tucker even had rotating headlights before the Citroen DS even came about. The fact these companies no longer exist is because they were just too radical for the average consumer to accept. Which makes them cool. Epic. Awesome. It's the same reason why Lancias are awesome.
 
Lessee...second most powerful American car in '56, very rare, Last two years of production featured a supercharged V8 with less than 5 litres...

And style that the style snobs hate. and American, which the American haters hate.

You and I are on very similar working terms here. First application of the Paxton Supercharger company, if I remember correctly, but voting with the SubZero.

Hard to find classics like these anymore.They obviously were overshadowed by the Chevy's of the same era which was too bad.The Studie was an awesome car,SUBZERO.
 
Uncool. Like many other people that have posted it's for the way it looks.

The fins and what I can see of the back in that picture is fine, and then my eyes gradually cruise to the front and immediately want to curl up and die.

50's American cars can look good, but this doesn't seem like one of them. No matter how overrated they are to Americans, '57 Bel-Air > Golden Hawk in my opinion.

The moral of the story here though is: looks are subjective. I can't understand that people find this Studebaker an attractive car, but I can understand that they're entitled to their opinion, no matter how crazy I think they are. Ditto the Barracuda which I think looks pretty cool, and ditto your dream Starion which to me is just another dull, characterless 1980s Japanese shape.
 
Seriously uncool. For the most part classic American cars are uncool, this gets knocked into the seriously uncool range for being hideous. You'd also have to explain what this is to most people since Studebaker is a defunct brand.

About the only redeeming factor for the car is that for it's time it had one of the best power-to-weight ratios out there, hitting 60 in 7.8 seconds. However, performance really doesn't have much to say about the coolness of a car.

If somebody needs an explanation to know what a Studebaker is that person doesn't know too much about car history, no doubt about that. Those are the very same people that think Ferraris and Lamborghinis are the pinnacle of coolness which tells it all.

While the Hawk family, the Silver and Golden especially, may look awkward to a modern eye it has truckloads of character, something that is very sorely missing in today's Hondas (and Acuras) that think they are razors, Mazdas that can't stop smiling, Toyotas one doesn't even notice, Volvos that went from being boxy and dull to being rounded and even duller...

Sub-Zero, no doubt. If only for daring to look like that but it's not the only reason by any means.

Not necessarily. I'm not that fussed on Lamborghinis and Ferraris, but I still think the Stude is absolutely hideous, and therefore uncool. There's no ignorance or lack of knowledge motivating it, I just have full use of my eyes.
 
While not the biggest fan of the gargantuan fins of the late 1950's (I like the '55-'56 T-bird over the '57 because of the more understated tailfins, and the '61-'63 over the "batmobile" '58-'60 because of the tail fins) I do appreciate tailfins.

That said, the Golden Hawk is a pretty cool machine!
However, I personally prefer the flat trunk to the tailfin trunk, as the tailfins on that particular model look very much like an afterthought.
