The stats don't lie, but certain acts of poor sportsmanship drag him down in the world.

he had an edge over Button at Honda in 2006 and 2007 but not 2008.
Wrong way round? Button came alive at the end of 06 and actually managed to get something out of the 'Earth Car' (presumably a dystopian, post-apocalyptic Earth the way it went) in 07. But it was Barrichello who turned it up in 08, even after discounting the strategy-induced 3rd at Silverstone.

@C-ZETA Perhaps. It now occurs to me I got 2007 and 2008 mixed up. 2007; the only season out of 19 that he failed to score points.

Still, Barrichello is Schumacher's best teammate 'adjusted for inflation' if you will, because Schumacher vs Rosberg skews pretty much all of MSC's career records.

Damon Hill isn't a legend, but I do think he is very under appreciated.

I would say he is perceived close to where he was as a driver, he was one of the best at the time but lacking against the Mika/Schumi tier of driver.

When it comes to under Appreciated World champions that Title would have to go to Nelson Piquet, keep in mind he is a 3 time Champion and is often looked at as Lesser to Prost, Senna and to most even Mansell(despite beating him to the title in the same car in 1987 with no Favourability), his Talents was his Technical way of driving similar to Niki Lauda but when your Country has another driver named Senna its understandable why he was often the 2nd fiddle Brazilian.

Come 2009 and his Indian summer, and he had the most fabulous season he could have hoped for, but as you say Sagaris, his mental strength most likely cost him the title that year. Still, I totally marked out when he got those wins in Italy and Spain.
I think a decision before the season even started may have contributed very largely to Rubens losing the 2009 WDC. After a (at least intra-team) successful 2008, Rubens inexplicably switch to Hitco brakes for 2009 instead of staying with the Brembo discs that he was comfortable with. He struggled with them and was getting beaten badly by Button. He switched back to Brembo at roughly mid-season, and although he was immediately faster than Button and ended up winning 2 races, the damage had already been done as the Brawn 001 was no longer the strongest package. Not very well documented this anecdote, but a crucial tidbit regarding that driver's title.

One reason I always felt that Damon Hill is under appreciated is, firstly, that he didn't make his F1 debut until he was 32 and his first win was just shy of his 33rd birthday.

Coupled with that, he was vastly inexperienced when he became Britain's #1 driver and the Williams team leader. The pressure he had in 1994 was immense and I don't think enough people appreciate that in context. It's easy to look back now and think that he did well in difficult circumstances and was unlucky to not win the title in 1994 but really; he had just 21 Grands Prix under his belt when Ayrton Senna died. He was already under the spotlight as Britain's 'top' driver in F1 but now he had to carry not only the flag of Britain's #1 driver, but also that of team leader of Britain's #1 team and the fact that he was Graham Hill's son. As an old debutant with very little F1 experience, this was an astonishing set of circumstances.

Not only that, he was a very good and very quick driver during his short career. He excelled at Williams and he shouldn't have left for Arrows in 1997. That 3rd place qualification and oh-so-near victory at Hungary 1997 typified his quality and his 1998 drives for Jordan were just as good. He retired at the right time, but I feel he's not ranked as highly as he ought to be, perhaps because his career was pretty short.

Are any more of these coming?

I believe @Justin is busy to run this at the moment.

I'm waiting until the end of the F1 season so there will hopefully be a little more discussion.
