Wait...:odd: Err, nevermind.

:lol:

Well if everyone chiped in and donated some $$$, then maybe these popups woudn't be necessary. ;)

I got that "your computer could be in danger" also. What a load of hogwash. I'm running ZoneAlarm and a Popup blocker. whats with this? This site is the one site on the net free of ads and its a sanctuary from the onslaught of popups.

doesnt worry me... 1 a day is manageable.
set coockies (mmm.... coockies) and you should only get 1 every 12 hrs d00d

As Giles has already discovered, one pop-up is intended to display only once every 12 hours. In my own testing, it works fine, but as always there are problems with everyone else. For those of you who have cookies disabled (for some some strange reason), and therefore get a pop-up on every page, I have made a few changes. The pop-ups will only appear once every 12 hours for guests. So, if you are logged in to your account you will not get any pop-ups at all. I can understand how annoyed each of you getting pop-ups on every page are, but you must understand that that was never intended and I apologize for the inconvenience.

It's kinda a double standard that GTP has legislature against advertising, yet it seems to be breaking it's own rules.

:rolleyes:
No, there is no double standard. Advertising put in place by me in return for financial compensation and free self-promotion at my expense are two completely different things.

I have cookies disabled. :P Paypal said something about em so I said screw it and disabled 'em. I knew it'd have side effects! :mad:

Hey Jordan - I get popups everytime I come on the site. Not on every page, but everytime I first come on (then never again). I never (or rarely) log off. Not really annoying, but I am logged in and I still get pop-ups. Is that intended?

Sorry Jordan.

Thanks for fixing it though.

You could make it so that guests(any un-logged in person viewing GTP) sees the pop-ups, and then as an incentive, say that if they register then they can use GTP pop-up free.

I can understand 1 popup every 12 hours. However I cannot understand popups everytime you open a page. Jordan, I thank you for choosing the latter of the two. One ad is better than 12 million each time a page loads.

No, that is certainly not intended. When you get a pop-up, in your browser, click on "View" and then go to "Source" (you can also right click on a blank area of the page and click "View Source"). Once the source code has been opened up, look at the top few lines of code and see if you see the following code...

Code:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- 12 hours
if (document.cookie.indexOf("popuptrafficbehind") == -1) {
var expdate = new Date((new Date()).getTime() + 43200000);
document.cookie="popuptrafficbehind=general; expires=" + expdate.toGMTString() + "; domain=www.gtplanet.net; path=/;";
document.write("<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=\"JavaScript\" src=\"http://view.popupsponsor.com/media/lx.js?a_id=8487&creative_type=3\"></script>");
}
//-->

If you see it and you are logged in, something is wrong. You could be looking at a cached version of the page, either from your computer or your ISP's (AOL) proxy server. If you do not see it and you still have this new pop-up, then the pop-up did not originate from GTP.

Strangely I didn't get it this time but I can be sure to do this next time. Thanks for the explanation, Jordan. :)

I fully support his decision to ad(:sly:) pop-ups. If he needs help covering the expenses of the site I have absolutely no problem with it.

I'll take an extra large pop-up to go, please.👍

Cobraboy, I think you should go read the rest of this thread. Popups are now a guest-only feature.

Jordan, that's a FANTASTIC idea! A real incentive to get people to register. (Might have to plagiarise that one! ;) )

This is surprising to me. I have a pretty good pop-up killer, and I hadn't even noticed.

This brigns me to think that we need to compensate Jordan for providing this page? I don't mean that to sound like it does.

I frequent another forum, that has a fund raiser twice a year to raise money for the board to keep it pop-up free. If I can send a few bucks to Jordan, and keep this a pop-up free site, I'd be happy to do that.

Thanks again for all that you provide, Jordan.

This idea has been dicussed before, maybe not as serious as maybe it needs to be discussed now. Its a good idea, and with as many members as GTP has, a couple bucks from everyone wouldn't do anything but help Jordan and the site. We could use Paypal or something...

On the other hand, I really don't mind a couple pop-ups on the main page when I first access the site if it helps Jordan, and so far thats all I have seen. I think I get one pop-up, on the main page and thats it. One more click of the mouse before I click "community" is not a big deal.

Whatever helps Jordan I am in support of, besides look at what he does to support this community, in all reality us as members.

I've seen other forums where you can pay a few bucks to get a pop up free site. If you don't want to pay you get ads. Nobody gets deprived and those of us who are intolerant of pop ups can pay for the luxury.

Accepting donations is a real possibility. However, I would probably feel more comfortable integrating subscription-based features with the help of vBulletin 3 once it is released.

Subscription based services!

I'd happily fork over cash for the extra features, especially if it keeps this site fst and free.

Thanks Again,

AO

How far away is that? Just curious.

There's still no release date from the vB developers, so that is still up in the air at the moment. :(
