Today after work I will be picking up a new (old) car, this is on a whim when I randomly surfed the local craigslist and saw some cars I was interested in. I instantly fell in love with the first car I drove and after a week of negotiating, research, and seriously wondering if I'm crazy I've been able to get the car for $1,500 cash. Though it may take a while to actually sell, I've put my '88 Mercedes Benz 300E up for sale but I plan to keep it tagged until the sale so I can work on my new toy. I will be keeping my other car ('88 MB 500SE) since my fiance is driving it and it's too awesome to let go. Plus I don't want to feel like to much of a badge traitor (hint).

Anyone care to take a guess what I've purchased? I'll post a big hint later tonight unless it get's dark before I get the car home. Here are some more clues:
smaller than the 300E, same number of seats (barely)
same or possibly better on gas
5 speed manual

I don't want to make it too easy so that's all for now.

good guess but no, would the big six have a chance of being better on gas?

EDIT: I've always wondered what the car in your avvy is

I refuse to complete this survey given that I already know what it is. Nonetheless, I wish you luck with it. :)

Keep that Euro 500SE until the end of time. (Otherwise, sell it to me? :P )

How many miles does Greyhound have?

222k 2k less than the car I just bought

You're thinking of DAve's Redneck Rollercoaster.

I dunno...F-body?

nope, love them, but I don't look good with a mullet

E30 325i?

Was just about to say the very same thing :grumpy:

;)

Amphicar?

lolz I wish!

Very nice 👍 Do I get an internetz cookie for guessing correctly?

On a more related note, any plans for it?

I'm used to Mercedes where you are very restricted as far as tuning and modifying. Even after only a week of research I see a huge market out there for parts so once I tidy the car up a bit (it doesn't need much) I will probably throw some fast at it.

Om nom nom. Cracker loves cookies? There's a joke in there somewhere.

Anyway, more details about the Bee-Em! How many miles etc?

Tell me about it. A guy I used to work with bought a black E30 325i 4dr with 250k miles on the clock. He gave me a lift home in it once and it was silky smooth and didn't have a single rattle. I seem to remember he paid about £500 for it...

I'd love a E30 325i Touring to strip out and turn into a trackday car, but you just don't see any around these days. Most will probably be autos anyway. :(

yes unfortunately we never got the wagon so the possibility is even dimmer over here. I must say I was surprised at how many of the E30/E36 on craigslist were automatics :yuck:

Here is what needs to be done besides regular maintenance:
clunk from underneath when shifting, most likely trans mounts or flex disc.
passenger window, not the switch or the fuse, probably the motor
drivers exterior door handle, checking the junkyard this weekend, not a biggie.
water in the trunk, mostly before purchase. replacing tail light and antenna seals for now but it seams that the previous owner cleaned the gutters and that may have done it.
The tach and temp gauges are a little flicky, I have to take out the cluster to replace some bulbs so hopefully it's a loose connection. Also the Odo and trip meter both have stopped about 2k ago, not sure what that could be but I plan to find out.
Cruise control doesn't work. Laugh if you want but with so few things wrong I hope to fix it.
AC doesn't work, not surprised and not concerned, none of my MB have had it working.

Not sure on this with E30's but my E24 635CSi had no end of problems with the dash cluster, most were due to leaked batteries in the service indicator board. Having said that - the Odo stopping in my 6 was due the plastic drive cogs in the counter being f'd!

High mileage BMW engines can often stay silky smooth for far longer than the body shells will last! My E28 has done 220k and still purs like a kitten (except the exhaust manifold gasket is now holed :frown: )

Yeah I've read plenty about the dreaded SI. I'm probably going to have my friend solder some new nicad 3v AAs from radioshack onto the board while it's out. The engine runs smoothly as it is, plan to change the following so hopefully it will be even smoother:
oil- trying synthetic for now
fuel and air filters
plugs, cap and rotor
valve cover gasket, going to try my hand at a valve adjustment as well.
could probably use a PS fluid change as well.
