The car was at the 2003 Geneva auto show, that is not between 1980-1999.
 
Like I said, best I could do, as it looks similar but I know it doesn't quite match.

I thought it might have been an Ruf or 9ff but again, nothing for that period.

I still think it looks like a Spirra! You're right about the Guara matching many of the clues though, didn't look quite right to me but does seem the most likely candidate, and (EDIT) looking at more pics, can see it now. Interesting car too, had dismissed it previously.

As usual, this thread has helped me discover a ton of new cars :)

Curiously it's the second time I've guessed a Guarà. It's such a beautiful piece of motoring.

This isn't nearly as handsome or rare.
