It must be a bomber, but it has no defensive weaponry at all. Then again, if it's a one-off proto, I guess it wouldn't.

I agree that it's probably French. It just "looks" French.

Good thread. I'm seeing lots of craft I've never seen before.

It sure is a French bomber. Since lots of people seem to be having trouble, I'll say that I'm certain it was made by Dewotine (sp?).

It would almost have to be, given its age.

Yeach, I want to say PBY-5, but I can't come up with the Navy name, and it's sitting on the main gear wrong anyway... I know this one but it's going to take a little to dredge it up.

So I was right that the last one was Italian!

It's like a B-25's ugly sister or something.

EDIT: Wait a minute. It isn't a twin. It has four engines. Didn't see them at first...

Close, but (hint) pay close attention to the front turrent (hint).

Oh, yeah, that's the key to what this variant is, all right. It isn't the F-7 photo recon version, so I can't place it.

Not a "Liberator" or "Liberator II", huh?

Hmmm...

It's a FlyBerator

Well, it never really had a formal designation, but it was an attempt at combining the defensive armament of a Fortress with the range of the 'Furniture Van'. Apparently the flying characterists were miserable and the hybrid project was canned.

So I'll give it to j.o. 👍

hehe, it reminds me of a SilEighty.

Mmkay, can anyone tell me what this is...

Nah, cowling is too angular and the bottom of the fuselage is almost bulbous. I'm thinking either french or italian.

With the cannon through the propellor hub, the razorback cockpit, and the upright tail, I'm going with Mauraine-Saulnier... umm, MS400-something.

OK! Rather than troll through the web looking for really obscure things, I tend to only post aircraft I already know of or have seen in real life. I guess I have a thing for amphibians lately. A guy that lived near me on the Chesapeake Bay used to have one of these, though I never got a ride in it.

Just saw one fly over my house a few months ago. I use to know what it was...

*slaps head in hopes of getting neurons to fire*

Yep indeedy! This was one of those post-war aircraft aimed at selling one to everybody in America for their weekend vacation home on the lake. It never really got going, just like all of those planes. It's funny to see one fly over because they bellow and holler even when they are going very slow.

Your turn! Nice catch.

Okay, this is pretty obscure but I'll bet somebody will figure it out. I'll take either it's exact designation number or its derogatory nickname:

Ah HAH! That's the North American YF-106 (I'm guessing there) "Thundershriek". Based on the Thunderchief, it was apparently insanely loud when the turboprop was running. I think they tried the tuboprop hybrid in order to extend the range, but I don't really remember.

Oh, you're close enough. It's the XF-84H "Thunderscreech". It was so loud it was debilitating to ground personnel. In 12 flights, it made 10 emergency landings.

Its now in the AF Museum in Dayton. I saw it many times, impaled on a 10-foot-tall pylon, displayed at the entrance to the Bakersfield Airport.

Your turn again!

Heh, close as I can get without Google, anyway ;) Thanks! I was actually thinking of something different, but while I was digging up a good picture of the other I ran across this old favorite. It's so pretty that I had to go with this instead:
