Z/M 10 fighter anyone? All the info I have on it at the moment.

Sweet, I loved the old one. This one looks ok, the headlights will take a bit to get used to. But congrats to Merc for going back in time--sort of. :sly:

That's a risky move going with Gullwings as they are one of the most unsafe features you could have on a car.

This looks much better than the SLR, although the shopped Lexcedes at the bottom of the page doesn't help making it look credible...

I know this may sound stupid, but is anyone else getting a Saturn Sky meets SLR vibe from the angle of this picture?

I like it, a lot. I've always been a fan of the 300SL, my Grandfather as well, he almost bought a Gullwing in 1958 but instead went with a Chrysler 300D.

If they build it, strap in the SLR's 5.5L S/C V8, and actually offer a manual transmission, they would have a winner. Of course, the car will have to not only have a balance of comfort and sport, but it will also have to look civilized while restraining monsterous performance. As an option of the SL which it would presumably be based uppon, I'm all for the return of the Gullwing...

Wait, how could gullwings be unsafe if they are closed when driving...?

From what I heard, any cars with Gullwings like the Bricklin, or DeLorean got in an accident, the doors prevented problems getting out.

Well, since we never hear about 300SL accidents, these problems are associated with DeLorean and Bricklin.

Aswell as getting out if the car is on its roof due to a rollover.

pontiac solstice photoshop anyone?

Actually the more I look at it the more it does look like someone photoshopped a Solstice or Sky...

LOL

I honestly dont like the front of that car.....MB designers have a strange taste.

The CX7 is out already.
Screw you, Bangle, your :censored:ing up everyones cars!!
And yes the new E class does look like a GS, I was going to write a letter to Motor Trend about that but too much trouble.
As for the gullwing, I like it except the headlights.

We all know Lexus copies mercedes and BMW.

So basically first lexus copied the front of the merc but made the lights squarish and then they moved off from the merc and started copying maybach cues. They also copied alot of BMW cues for the rear of theyre cars, and many of the technology in theyre cars always came two years after its been in a mercedes or BMW. Now this latest E-class which takes cues from the s-class, which takes cues from the maybach looks similar to the lexus. But lexus did the copying.

The new GS isn't a copy of the Maybach, it's just a continuation from the old GS, it's less like than mayback than the old GS was like the E-Class. But you only taking in one single area of design, and that's the lights, sure thay are a rather large part of the design, changing a car's lights can alter people's entire perspective's of a car at times, the rest of the cars look more than different enough. If you want to get really picky, every car copies the horse cart, because it has wheels.

As live4speed said, the GS-Maybach comparison is overinterpretation imo...
Many modern cars share design elements, I mean honestly, in the end a car is a car : you need lights, windows, a place for a number plate, aerodynamics, some holes in the frame in order to get air into the engine etc I mean, there are not so many possibilities and designers can't develop everything totally unique every time...

...Some speculative news on the Gullwing revival...

Leftlanenews.com
Last week, we published a full-size scan from the cover of a recent issue of Germany’s AutoBild magazine showing an artist’s rendering of a rumored remake of the classic Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing.’ We’ve since had the chance to look at the accompanying article, and a few more details are available. According to the report, the 2010 model is expected to offer 750 horsepower via a 6.3-liter bi-turbo V8. The entire project is said to be under the direction of the automaker’s AMG group.

The car will have a front-mid-engine layout with 50:50 weight distribution, according to the report. Mercedes is not decided on what type of body construction to use, but the emphasis will be on light weight. So far, there’s no word on specific performance numbers, dimensions, or prices, but “there is a clear vision,” the magazine said.

The Leftlane Perspective: Could this be another collaboration between Mercedes and McLaren? In January, McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh said another road car could be in the works. “The level of interest in McLaren from Mercedes-Benz is higher than it has ever been,” Whitmarsh said. “There is a clear commitment to be in F1 in the long term and refreshed interest in road car activities. I think it is increasingly likely that there will be a range of sportscars designed in Woking in the future.”

One possibility to consider is that this model could be a replacement for the Mercedes SLR coupe, which is expected to give up the spotlight to the SLR roadster next year. According to Auto Motor und Sport SLR roadster sales are expected to exceed coupe sales. If SLR roadster has a folding hardtop like it’s SL- and SLK-Class siblings, it could theoretically replace the SLR coupe entirely.

Such a move would create space for a new supercar coupe, such as this proposed Gullwing model.

...I'm all for it, esp. with the big bi-turbo V8. Sweet!

Have car manufacturers lost all creativity, depending on reviving old nameplates to try and increase sales?

Where are "new" cars that break barriers and bring new innovations to the automotive industry? Crossovers?.......please!

This is really just a rant on "retro-ism" and I appologize. But I have no interest in nameplates of old being reincarnated.

As for staying on topic, the specs of the car seem very attractive, especially the 750hp. Too bad I will never be able to afford it.

Mercedes are rumoured to be launching a takeover bid for mclaren. Dont worry though guys the mclaren name will live forever though.

...Well, you can thank that baby-boomers for that. Being as nestalgic as they are, they want to re-live the past by re-creating the cars and trucks they grew up with as children. It isnt a bad concept, as I like many of the cars that have come out of this fad, but I can completely see where you are comming from.

I think the resurection of nameplates is allright if the cars themselves are somewhat faithful to the origional in some way/shape/form, but some of the styling exercises are getting a bit boring. It's kind of a two-way street I suppose, for instance I like the way the new Mustang and Camaro have been done, but I don't care much for the PT Crusier/HHR and SSR vehicles. They are just TOO overdone.

do you seriously believe any of these are legit? c'mon guys, weve all seen stuff like this before. ****y photshops assembled from other concept/production cars with a super far fetched story, usually from some foreign car magazine youve never heard of, heck even good magazines youve heard of. take a look at all the old threads from years past and see the percentage of the actual stuff that made it. now im not doubting the corrado proposal, but these pictures are just by some guy hired by the magazine staff.

The pictures are fake and what some fotoshop whizkid imagines it could look like. Its purely to help sell magazines. Atleast it gives us something to talk about though.

That gullwing mercedes looks amazing... im so glad merc are going back to sharp squarish headlights!

While I am not sure of the validity of this or the article posted from leftlane discussing it's possible stats what I am sure of is that Mercedes probably has a Gullwing on the drawing board. I wouldn't not be suprised to see this as a concept in a year or two. I think it would be a very hot seller too. Well as hot as a supercar can be. I do think leftlane news was on the money with the speculation that it will be the replacement for the SLR roadster if it is made.

I hope they do make it. I like the retro trend that is going on. It seems that in the 80s-90s car designers lost touch with the ability to make elegant looking cars. I think going back to the retro designs has hopefully given the car designers an insight to those beautiful cars from the past and will help them find more elegant lines for the future. The SL gullwing mercedes of old is one of the timeless classics and a modern take on it would be pretty cool.

As for the powerplant, while Mercedes has spent loads of money on developing the biturbo system I don't know if their supercars will house it. It seems to me to be almost too common of a system for use in their supercar. The SL65 seems to be the pinnacle of this technology. I would assume they would have something new that they haven't used previously for this car. It may be something with the biturbo system but I have a feeling it is likely to be a NA powerplant.

My first impression is that it looks like a photoshopped Saturn Sky/Opel GT. The front is very similar.

i think it would be great if we just took all the rumors as a basis for the drawing/design competitions here, cus that sub forum is so dead! at least the speculative designs would by actual forums members
