This might be a bit too obscure, so I'll throw out a couple of hints:
  • Entered service at the end of the 1980s.
  • Only used by one country.
 
I know hardly anything about guns (got CS 1.5, Crossfire, COD3 and 4).
And that looks like either a G3 (I'll give that to UnionStrike) or a K2...

EDIT: K2 fits the req - 1984 and South Korea

EDIT2: I'm wrong - it's used by Bangladesh, Fiji and Indonesia too...
 
Daniel is the closest (and had a really good guess), because the one country that uses it is Asian.

Nope, not German at all. Time for a hint, me thinks.

Hint* - It was manufactured in North Africa for use in the Vietnam war after being made at the place it was named after for twenty years.

I knew it was an anti-tank rifle, you don't forget the size of those things! Just had to do some quick searching to know which one.

Bren gun.

actualy held one of those before along with a vikers machine gun a lee enfield ww2 rifle and an SA80 guess which was the lightest.
