Greetings,
All you folks with a computer hanging off a cable connection, and no firewall, check this out:

npf.gif

These are the stats for a fairly typical 5 hours for me on the computer.

The first line shows my internet accesses, of which 29 were actual attempts to port-scan the PC or to exploit vulnerabilities. The thing's been plaguing me with security alerts all night, but it's reassuring to see that the firewall is picking these up and blocking them.

The second line shows instances where browsers have requested information from me, and I have/have not allowed it. The principle 'blocked' information is my IP address, which I know GTP tries to access.

I bought Norton Personal Firewall for £30. That's the cost of my peace of mind.

Thought some of you might be interested.

Thanks for the info Giles, I'll definitely have to keep that in mine once I get cable:eek:

We have access to your IP, along with everyone elses, bruhahahaha,...

Anyways...:P

I get an average of 100,000,000 Port scans a day, and around 500 Malicious attacks (worms security hacks ect.)

I use blackice firewall

I have ZoneAlarm along with McAfee Firewall. I always run 2 firewalls just in case. ;) I dont trust only one fire wall.

BlackIce and Micafee are good... However I don't run Micafee because I need to free up some ports, and it dosn't give me the flexability that BlackIce does.

Does it give you the IP of the attacker? I have got several people removed from their ISP for trying to hack into my computer using a trojan....

Hey! Somebody voted this a :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: thread! That's so cool!

Cheers! :D

Yeah, NPF does. Here's an example from the log file:

Date: 2/3/2002 Time: 12:51:29
Rule "Default Block Backdoor/SubSeven Trojan" blocked (talisker,27374). Details:
Inbound TCP connection
Local address,service is (talisker,27374)
Remote address,service is (62.31.147.203,1637)
Process name is "N/A"

I've had no feedback at all from ISPs when I've reported these attacks on my system to them. It's too much hassle for me to look into it in detail unless I'm being bombarded from the same address, in which case I'll do something about it.

heres a screenshot of what mcafee personal firewall has logged for me. and im on 56k so security is a must for everyone that can access the internet.

No firewall, just a bare bones virus scanner, and a good deal of common sense. I've had my own computer for 7 years, and I've never had a virus, and never been attacked any other way. Only time I lost a comp was due to lightning.

I guess security isn't so much of a must.

Bought Norton SystemWorks 2003 of eBay, so I should be up and running with a firewall and stuff soon. :D

I run Norton Systemworks and Personal Firewall. Sometime last weekend someone decided to try and bombard my firewall. They didn't succeed, and also got reported.

I run Norton Personal Firewall 2003 and ESET Nod32 (antivirus). I've had a few intrusion attempts but Norton has blocked them.

Hardware firewall, Zone Alarm, Norton personal firewall, Ip changer (randomly cahnges IP every so often on my DSL line) plus 128 bit encrypted wireless access point for my laptop which is also firewalled. and 2 anti virus progs...I also have a 128 bit encrypted chat program that encrypts my conversations over AIM, YAHOO, MSN, etc. so when I want to talk in private only me and the person i give a key to can see whats going on....so AOL or any other company that may be listening in cant understand what were talking about....I don't know why I have all this stuff....but it's nice to know I'm safe....I think....
