Occasionally I use it to do big loopy spins across the finish line.

There is a school of thought in performance driving that believes the handbrake, used effectively, can be used to rotate the car quickly in certain situations.

This is common practice in rally driving. I'm not an expert in rally techniques, so I'll decline to comment there.

It is also sometimes used in Solo II (autocrossing), and somewhat popular with the F&F FF crowd.... although I'm personally convinced the technique is a waste of time and brake lining.

I've never heard of it being used intentionally in road course racing.

Red_Eye_Racer: You know, you should've made this a poll where you can select multiple answers. I'm really torn between "never use it" and "like to eat poop."

I'm with neon_duke on this one, though. I would never use the handbrake when trying to get a good time, but it's fun to fly across the finish line backwards -- especially when you're just a little bit ahead. It's funny to win by 0.2 sec when you're going backwards.

Also, for crazy people trying to get 100% with the least milage, your car doesn't accumulate any miles when going backwards. If you're ahead in an endurance race, you can save several miles by getting up to 200 MPH on a straight then using the handbrake to do a 180. You will maintain a lot of speed going in reverse if you do it right, but you won't be accumulating any miles. You can just drive backwards normally, but then you only have about a 50 MPH top speed.

That's what I find.

Mostly I just use it for a celebration at the end of the race.

But, I did use it when setting my record for top speed in the Escudo without a wheelie. It works kinda like a clutch. I got my top speed of 336.2 mph by spinning the tires in a massive burnout right from the line. But I kept hitting the wall. So, I had an idea! 💡 I parked the Escudo half-way through the corner. Then I held the handbrake/clutch, revved the engine to the redline, & then dumped the clutch. (Handbrake, I know.) I was able to do another burnout from the corner, & finish on the straight still spinning the tires until I got over 336.

I find it helpful sometimes when taking a corner and seeing that the car is understeering too much, so just a quick tap of the handbrake gets the car back on the racing line. I dont think its faster tho, just a way to correct my line sometimes. Besides that, I use it for the multiple 360's before the finish line like many of you said

To make those crazy 180s and to start donuts, I guess thats it...

Touching it during normal driving always results in me going into the wall... so I don't see any use for it during racing.

i use the hand brake a lot!! when im riding my skyline in midfield for example and in come up in the hairpin near the end i mean its way faster than you riding around the curve

but hey thats jsut my view of things

 delucani I agree!

I too like to do big 360s when I finish.. Except, here's a tip.

NEVER start the handbrake procedure when:

a) You are not even close the the '6th' line *for the starting grid*
or
b) Have another car right on your tail

I did one of em 360s fun... thought I could win the race.. Then i realized i was too far to spin through the finish line.. then everyone else beat me and i was left with a 6th finish..:(

halrfracedrift: You've got to line it up so that the second place car smashed into you and you still win. Those are more fun.

I sometimes use it to drift around tight hairpins occassionally. And I always finish a race with a big spinout unless I'm going to have a record breaking lap.

yup, i use it to go sideways across the line.. tho its bad when you think its the last lap and it isnt :/

tight hairpins are a good location to use it too

I use it mostly on Rally mode only speshly on Tahiti Maze into the hairpins, I never use it on circuit races tho.
The best technique is to break as normal then yank the handbrake as you turn into the corner use just the handbrake whilst still accelerating does knacker all.

The handbrake is helpful when:

You know you are gonna crash anyway, so you want to spin out for fun.

You are 3 laps ahead and want to spin across the finish line for show.

You like red tires.

the best place to use the handbrake and the fastest I have seen it used is at the two hairpin 180's at Monaco :D

sorry thinking about a girl :D

ya know man thats twice you said ''monoca''
People are really gonna be bugged by this. So you know it's MONACO

Lets see: uses for handbrake/Emergency brake
Start drift
Get back on line
Turn sideways when you know your going to hit the wall head on(Seattle when your not paying attention on the jumps)
Rallys(we all know its faster to whip the car sideways in a rally instead of trying to use the real racing line because of the little grip provided)
Finish backward

All i can think of

mmmmmm pewp!

The very first time I played GT3, I used the handbrake before I ever used the regular brakes.

It was the B-License Test, which is the braking one wtih the VW Beetle I believe. I use the handbrake to spin the car around so I can start a four wheel power slide. This stops the car faster than doing it the traditional way.
