Today is GM's 100th Birthday, yet another milestone for this automotive giant who has done it all, and seen it all. Just five short years ago, Ford hit their centennial, and they wanted to help celebrate...

Happy-100-To-GM.jpg

GM will be celebrating for a while at GMNext, and as I recall, there are events going on all day in Detroit.

Add to that, GM has revealed one of their most-important vehicles ever today, the Chevrolet Volt, in celebration of their 100th Anniversary.

From the company that brought us the electric starter, the automatic transmission, made FWD a possibility in the US, gave us the origional small-block, has been a dominating force in motorsport around the world, and continues to deliver cars that move people across the globe, this is the start of their second century.

From my GM-loving family, happy birthday!

Feel free to share your thoughts, memories, photos, etc on the brand too...

Well played sir.

Happy birthday GM! Do I get a discount on a Camaro RS/SS? :)

Happy Birthday GM!!!

Now just stay alive, and make more muscle cars :D

If you want GM to survive the last thing they need to be doing to making muscle cars. They need to be focused on alternative energy vehicles that don't suck. The Volt is very promising and as long as the quality is good I see it being a success. Once they get that sort of technology down then GM can focus on alternative energy sports cars, which would be pretty cool.

I realize, I was joking.

Bleh, it makes me sick to think of GM pumping out more alternative energy vehicles :yuck:

Why? Oil isn't going to be inexpensive forever and we need to think about alternative energy vehicle now while fuel prices are still relatively inexpensive. I mean within ten years Americans could easily be paying $7-$10 a gallon for fuel, which would cripple us unless we plan ahead. Thankfully GM is finally starting to read through their memos and understands this. Now only if they could wise up and figure out that E85 is a terrible idea.

I agree, that's why I got myself a Hyundai Elantra for it winning the awards for best economical car, and yes yes I know you're sick and tired of me talking about it too

Because I despise change, and such a major change is practically the anti-christ to me. Hybrids are disgusting little vehicles, and If I could I would personally smash every single last one of them. That's just me though.

Let's just celebrate for GM, and remember the good years.

I don't see why oil should have to become so expensive when we have an abundance of it untouched within our own borders. That is a whole different argument though which this thread doesn't need.

This is actually a very important part of GM's future though, thus on topic with the thread. If GM wishes to see another 100 years or even another 20 years they need to focus on the future, and that future is not in oil.

Yes we have untouched oil in our boarder, but at what cost is it to drill it? It's not just the impact on the environment either, how will it affect us financially and politically. What about the people living near the drilling sites? What sort of impact will a disaster at the drilling area mean for us?

If drilling for more oil is the answer, you are asking the wrong questions. As a species we need to start thinking now before the global economy, which runs on fossil fuels, is crippled due to skyrocketing prices. It's all supply and demand, with an increase in industrialisation in the world, more and more people are going to be burning more and more oil.

No we are not going to run out, but oil will get to a point where it is no longer feasible to use. By switching to renewable energy sources we won't have to worry as much about the increasing energy demand. It doesn't have to be hybrid cars although I fail to see what is wrong with them, but it does have to be something. The Volt is an example of what we should be going for, and I honestly believe it will do great things for GM and probably save them while Ford and Chrysler will continue to struggle unless then hop on board as well.

I don't understand why people are so dead set against changing technology, all I can say is I wish you luck when your petrol powered vehicle is obsolete because the rest of the world has switched to something else. And yes this will happen in our life time.

I'm on your side Joey D. I care about our future too. I don't want the world of the automobile to die because of our carelessness

I love how Joey always comes in and makes a big post in response to someone's joking or small remarks. I mean, you make really good points, and you could probably pwn me and a lot of other people in a debate, but c'mon man, choose your battles. Some of the remarks you respond to aren't even intended to be taken seriously.

Either way, happy 100 GM. I actually hope GM will get back on top of the market and start outselling the boring Toyotas I'm tired of seeing. I'm actually really interested in the Volt, despite the fact that I'm not too much of an eco car fan. I would like to see GM get back and give Toyota a run for their money.

I'll walk before I ever step foot in a hybrid vehicle, but what has to happen has to happen I guess. I really should have been born in the 50's, lol.

What do you care gator, you're not even a car enthusiast

Got a good deal with their employee pricing going on now until 09/30. I bascially got a new car at dealer cost and will be picking it up in a few days. 👍

Sorry for thinking that we should have an intelligent discussion about the future of GM and their products. I has nothing to do with "pwning" someone, if they have an opinion on something I want to know why. If I don't agree with it I will say why and hopefully it will create some sort of interesting discussion.

Alternative energy is going to happen sooner or later, we should be discussing how GM can beat others to the market, especially with sporty cars. It's how GM will stay around, instead of becoming a bottomless pit the government has to keep bailing out giving loans to.

Nah, I'm sorry. I was just a bit bothered that's all. I agree to a certain extent with what you're saying. I really would love to see GM beat others to the market *cough* Toyota *cough*.

Something I've been meaning to say, though, is that the muscle car, the sportscar, and the supercar can and hopefully will continue on no matter what. They'll just have to be made 'smarter.' Personally, I don't care if a car's electric or something, as long as it can fill the need for speed.

May I ask how you can have an electric muscle car? I know electric engines can be much faster, but where's the noise and the feel. That's one of the biggest problem I have with them because your basically taking away half of the car. A Ferrari would never be a Ferrari without the beautiful music coming from its tailpipes, and the same goes for practically any car (depending on personal taste of course).

That's why you be like on Pimp My Ride (with the Caravan/Voyager) and have speakers that emit a muscle car sound! :p

Well I guess we have a difference there. While I do appreciate the sound of a vehicle (viper viper viper viper), when I think of a vehicle I usually think of it's performance, sound simply being a bonus.

Muscle cars have been extinct for ages in my opinion, the oil embargo of the 70's killed them off. I don't really think we are going to have to worry about them. With a sports car all it really needs to have is good performance and it's golden. I agree with HACKr that sound isn't the most important part of a sporty car. Really when we start switching to alternative fuels, if we can have extremely good performing vehicles that are energy efficient at the same time I am all for it. Just because we switch fuel types doesn't mean we all need to drive Volts.

I guess we do differ quite a lot then, I would have never bought my car if the only sound that came out of it was that of air. Plus my car's 'performance' isn't the most outstanding.

Personally I'd buy a Ferrari engine and have it on a mount in my garage just so I could turn it on and listen to it.

I'm sure some companies will develop a speaker system for electric vehicles to give it a sound in the near future. Although it would be nice for vehicles to be quite, although until tire technology changes that isn't going to happen.

Well...if you have electronic sounds I'm sure you could just turn the system off if you want it quiet! ;)

Right, but I'm talking about for when I'm trying to sleep at night with the windows open. I don't want to hear a god awful racket in front of my house like so many of the Camaros and Civics feel the need to give me now.

Electric sounds :yuck:

I'm dumbfounded that you would actually want quiet cars and would think that electric sounds could just replace the real thing. I can't relate to you here on any level so I'm done with this conversation. Unbelievable.

If that's the future I get to look forward to I'd honestly rather hang myself

That's why you hang on to a gas engine and figure out a way to run it on something else, such as whale oil!
