I would like to eventually exercise my right to purchase and own a gun, you never know what's going to happen, but that'll have to wait until I could somehow afford one. In Florida you apparently don't even need a permit to own a gun, as long as you fill out the 4473 federal firearms transfer form you're all set.

As for you first firearm, it can only be a rifle or shotgun. Pistols, as already pointed out, can only be purchased when you turn 21.

So what firearm do you want to get? It depends on what shooting sport you first want to get into. Clay birds, or targets? Want to do some bird hunting, or hunt quadrupeds? Self defense needs? Is ammo cost a concern?

What ever you want to get, and if you have limited or no experience, contact the NRA and take a safety course. This is a MUST DO before you start using any new firearm for the first time.
