I thought I might post this on behalf of James (G.T). Chances are he won't see it until he fixes his problem, but you never know.

20mins ago he sent me this on MSN:

James
James says:
hard drive is giving up

came on pc this morning, everything was frozrn

hard drive was making strange clicking and whirring noises

turned it off, and it EVENTUALLY told me there was something wrong

done some test for 15 minutes

and it eventually got working again

after that, it tried to start up again

then another screen appeared

saying theres something wrong with hardware/software and to restart pc if you've seen this screen fot the first time

done that, and it took much longer to load than usual, and here i am

just its very gittery and slow

He then went offline and hasn't reappeared since.

It sounds pretty terminal to me. I tried to tell him to go Start>Run>chkdsk but he disconnected before i could send it.

Does anyone else have any advice?

That sounds like a Harddrive that seriously shat itself...

IF he gets another drive instead of trying to use this, he might be able to save _some_ of the files on it... If he continues to try - Chances are, everythings gone and unrecoverable...

I'm still here. ;) Thanks for the thread, Dunc.

This is still under warranty, to my knowledge, so if it does it again, or even breaks, it should be repaired/replaced. There isn't much important stuff to back-up from this anyway, so it wont be too problematic if it does suddenly give up.

The gittering has got better, but videos and opening up demanding programs still trigger it off. I don't want to see what it would do if it saw a game again...

*cough* lol

cool we only paid $40 to get ours fixed from a problem with system files missing so it wouldn't logon [that's why i was away from GTPlanet for a week at the start of July]
