Harry Potter: What's so bad about it?!

Something that has been irritating me over time....

Why do SO MANY Christians think it's the worst thing to hit the planet since the Ice Age?!! I'm a Christian, and a ton of Christians I know love the series as well. I'm perfectly aware that there is "witchcraft" involved, but let's be honest here for two seconds: NONE OF THIS IS REAL. Pagans say it's fantasy, and I've even heard some say it's an insult to witchcraft. Do I believe in Witchcraft? NO. I'm a CHRISTIAN. The story is completely make-believe and lets our imaginations soar with wonder. People who think it's real need to get a clue. I can see some concern (Divination, specifically. I will say that that part did make me slightly uncomfortable), but as long as the children are taught that this is all make believe, what's to worry? I know what I believe and mostly what I can handle. It's not like I'm going to go out to some shop and buy some tarrot cards. That's ludicrous. I've also read on a Christian website that some people can handle certain things, others can't. Some people may take this book seriously, some won't. Oh yeah, and did I mention that I've gone to Catholic schools? That's how I got introduced to the book. In the 6th grade, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was a reading assignment for the class, and much praise was given from parents and the students. It really hurt me when I had come to find out about Churches burning the books and everything. I was too young at the time to understand why and I'm starting to see the picture a bit more clearly. Don't we, as Christians, have better examples to set and more serious causes to worry about?

What about world hunger? War relief? Mission trips? Spreading the Gospel? Why aren't we putting as much effort into these causes as we are to trample over a simple and wonderful children's book series? We have more effective things to worry about and fix; this isn't helping.

I'm sure that you all are very aware of the enormous popularity of the Harry Potter series. I must admit I'm a huge fan of the books. I pre-ordered The Order of the Phoenix and got it early Saturday morning when it came out. Needless to say I think the books are wonderful, and J.K Rowling's writing is so rich and textured. The stories encourage good morals, courage, loyalty, overcoming your fears, and trying to make the best of yourself. Spreading positive messages couldn't get any better than this!

So please, feel free to express your full thoughts on this.

I'm on the fourth chapter of the 5th book. I've enjoyed it since the first. I don't see why people don't think that this book is bad.

I totally agree with you. My little sister speaks of Harry Potter and my aunt ( only christian in my family) will say i dont want you near those books. She even burned the books. + i told her those were good books and fun to read and she would keep saying that, The Devil wants everyone to read them so he can get his message through and etc. Its Craap.

what a smuck of an aunt...

I couldnt even finish either of the movies made so far. They were as exciting as Al Gore on sleeping pills. As for the books they never really grabbed my attention as well. It is all too kiddy for me. I feel like a huge nerd even just holding the book in my hand.

I think the books get more mature over time- like the characters. The 5th book is so Psychologically intense that I've had to put it down a couple times while reading just to grasp what's going on. I'm on the 9th chapter now and the action started on like page 20. It's pretty freaky, I must say.
It's definitely the darkest of the series so far (from what I've read.)

harry potter is another one of those things that will go away in about 10 years (i hope). harry potter is also toooo stupid to understand (i have a 12.9 reading level and i still dont get it)

It will die off like everything else. But it seems to me that almost every little fad I've been growing up around has been redeemed as "evil." Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Pokemon....

It's a series of book, and a boring one at that, with no pretentions outside entertainment.

You folks down the border are so uptight about religions, what else did you expect?

A) 12.9 is reallynot that high. I had that reading level in second grade.

B) There is a reason it is stupid: it is a children's book!

C) Harry Potter kicks ass. I think that Rowling has a gift, not really for the writing itself, but for the insight in her writing. And I think it is great how she gets lazy when naming her characters. And, Harry Potter is not a fad. The "oh, lets all wear capes and pointy hats," thing will disappear, but the books will never cease to be classics.
The fourth book is not that dark. No darker than Harry is. I believe that Rowling is actually attempting to be slightly humorous by changing the tone of the story to reflect Harry's mood. I laughed at it...

You read it? And you're Sage's friend? Dork.

I pride myself in that I've never read any of the books, or saw either of the movies, yet I still think the whole thing is crap.

And what the hell is a 12.9 reading level? Do you read at the level of the average high school senior or college freshmen?

its the whole lining up outside bookshops the night before the realse i dont get!
I wont even do that for a movie!

I am not particularly sucked in by media hype, etc anyhow L:)

Nothing's wrong with it!

I'm sure Harry Potter and the Magic Something will be just as big a hit as the other ones.

nah this ones been full of media hype... the others didnt get much of a mention in the media at all...
its amazing what the power of the media will do.
I have a friend who has read it already (freak) and says its "ok, but not brilliant"... the ending sux apparently.

I read it. And I am Sage's friend. But a dude is almost as bad as a dork, and I, given a choice, would perfer being dork. At least I am a dork who got a 1560 on the SAT. So Hah! I don't like pigs. I actually the book at midnight too. Except I didn't wait in line; I went to a 24 hour Ralphs. I laugh at all the people who waited in a line!

Now that I think about it, I would perfer nerd...

Yeah, this one kind of just lines up the next book. Kind of like the most recent matrix movie...

Prefer. And "I actually the book at midnight too" is verbless.

You got a 1560 on SAT? Get your head checked.

You could stand to use a little bit of reasoning. Judging by the sentences surrounding that one he obviously omitted the word "bought" from the sentence. A mistake anyone could make really.

People who burn books are VERY scary - your aunt sounds like a particuarly unpleasant individual.

I don't get the whole Harry Potter thing, but hey, if people are out there getting kids excited about reading, that can hardly be a bad thing, can it?

I'm just kidding there, Stevie. :)

Yes, calm down! I deserve a bit of chiding!:dopey: Plus, you don't have to write sentences on the SAT...

They're actually ammending it so that you'll have to in a couple of years. I'm just pissed you beat my score.
