Has anyone found ANY use for the driver list?

Something that has bugged me for a while. Well maybe not bugged but puzzled me. The driver list on the HUD, which shows you the drivers and their position, taking up quite a bit of screen if you have that part of the HUD turned on.

Has anyone found ANY use for this at all? Because I can't think of a single use of it. Why do you need to know where drivers are in the race? The only possible use I can think of is in a series event in the last race, knowing where your closest rival is and therefore where you need to finish in relation to them. But still, that's not exactly very common and still there isn't much you can do about it.

I like to keep the bottom part of the HUD on for the gear shift light but the driver list, which comes along with it, is really pointless 99% of the time. I really wish they would give us the option to pick and choose parts of the HUD we want on.

we need to be able to choose what we remove.
i would keep speed,Tach,Laps, and my position and thats it

One thing I'd like to see in further updates is the possibility to remove that list, or even let me know the cars instead of the drivers that I'm up against. For example, I'd be more worried if I'm in an Opel Speedster and an Audi R8 is behind me, rather than if O.Rivera or J.Nguyen is around.

It would make perfect sense if it told you what cars were there, which is what it defaults to in B-Spec and replays. Even in online mode, it makes sense to tell you the names, I suppose.

I've never understood exactly why PD felt it important to show you the driver's names in A-Spec, though; or at the very least make it adjustable like it is in B-Spec.

This might've been useful if it showed the time between you and the respective driver, like in just about every other racing game I can think of. This would be especially useful for all those times when you're not running second and you'd really like to know how far away the next car is, or for when you're running first and you'd like to know where the car that you know makes it's tyres/fuel last for ages when it's not in second. I could go on. This for me is a bigger missed feature than the ability to save mid season.

I use it to confirm I made a pass.

I see my name go up one, then I go on the defence and block.

Surely you have plenty of other visual indicators for that?

Indeed, that would be at least a bit useful.

Yep that's what I'm getting at, in A-Spec non-series races I can't see a single possible use for the list.

Also a good point, splits would be useful. Just names and numbers, are clearly not.

You get a split time when you are behind the car in 1st. You get a split time when you are in 1st to the 2nd.

Name and car would be useful on the list. Names on the list is more useful online. But you have to pay close attention at the start of an offline race to keep track of your closest rivals. No big deal.

I like it, it told me I was racing an R. Wallace today and an E. Andrews (didn't know she raced).

Useless in A spec but I always check it in online racing, if your nearest rival spins you know instantly and can slow up to protect tyres for example.
I also use it to check on how my team mate is doing in a championship race.

There are more than two cars in most races. ;)

Splits coming up for each driver, on the driver list, would be very nice. Particularly online, where the game ceases to be a timetrialing game and actually becomes a racing game.

It would be useful if they would add the gap times to the names (and the country flag), then you could see at least where you and where they are, especially when you are ways ahead or behind & you can't see the cars. :dopey:👍

Much more annoying are the arcadish driver names & flags above the cars. Gsus remove it, it's not Mario Kart! :ouch:

I'd love a more customisable HUD. for one I'd like to get rid of the Suggested gear indicator so I can actually use trackside objects as braking cues, but keep other aspects of the HUD.

I really miss the gap times between cars in B spec. That was great in GT4. Why they took it out I can't even guess. :yuck:

I think the only purpose of it is to see where you are in relation to the rest of the field. I don't use it as I don't use any HUD display.

I agree. The Driver List prove little to no use to me other than quickly tracking who's where in relation to my position, but there's already a split time and position number integrated in. It can be a bit more useful if it lets you switch between cars and drivers, like in B-Spec. It can also add in to the usefulness if it had the gap times between you and the other drivers, but rounded to the nearest second so it wouldn't take up space. Something around that nature can transform a useless HUD element to maybe something a bit resourceful.

@ GermanBastard

I agree with you there. The driver flag & name above the cars during free mode and racing can get annoying sometimes. It would be nice to configure this in the Network Options, at least configure the translucence delay.

It gets used A lot online. Sometimes, I see my self settle for say 4th but then I notice the guy ahead of me in the standings (In A racing series) I will speed up and try and pass. So yes, it gets used!

What really irritates me about the screen is when you are doing NASCAR and you get passed by a T. Shwitz driving a Jeff Gordon car.
They don't care enough to put in names so that Jeff Gordon is driving the Jeff Gordon car?

On an off-note, has anyone else seen S.Vettel and S.Schmitz? Any other hidden ones?

I get that "S. Vettel" is supposed to be "Sebastian Vettel", but "S. Schmitz" is probably a lesser-known name. I reckon you mean "Sabine Schmitz", since she's motor-related, but I don't know how many would know who you meant and I guess it could just as well have been Sascha Schmitz, a pop singer, or actress Sybille Schmitz.

Well, if you drive the Jeff Gordon car, your name isn't Jeff Gordon either, but rather the Jeff Gordon car is being driven by Kingsly or whatever name you've got in the game. If you can drive the Jeff Gordon car without being Jeff Gordon, I suppose there's no problem with other non-NASCAR names driving the other NASCARs.

It is a bit silly to secure the rights to the liveries of real-world Cup cars and even the names of their drivers but then not to bother using the driver names in the races.
