Just interested in your opinions with the arrival of forza 4 and the recent release of F1 2011, do you think the recent update of spec 2 and the forthcoming DLC keep GT5 looking like a fresh 2011 game. I am beginning to think that the car list does look a little dated ! although I am sure the nissans will be kept up to date ! I personally think that the DLC was missed opportunity to add some great 2011 models. oh well guess we will have to wait for GT6

oooh, there's plenty of threads about DLC and anything having to deal with that. There would have been someone else posting here to tell you this, but Superman is here, instead.

To answer your question, Spec 2 has definitely made GT5 more up-to-date. The changes are ones that make the game feel fresh to add another 10 months of quality gaming. Something like Visible Damage ON/OFF is a feature so simple, that it made the game feel out-of-date for not having. Obviously, not just that, but it's an example of what Spec 2 has brought us to make the game feel fresh.

This thread is definitely more of a specific DLC type thread, I just wouldn't know how far this would go when other people see it.

The poll is too limited, as well. It's not easy to judge what people mean by what the poll questions are stating. It's almost as if it could just as easily be a basic question asked and then getting no detailed explanation in the answer/vote.

Graphically the premium cars and some tracks look up to date, Standards and some tracks look well past their sell by date by some years, DLC of course that is up to date any fool can see that, But overall gameplay and features its getting left in the dust.

well I thought it was a pretty simple question Jakhole !!! does the DLC and Spec 2 do enough to keep GT5 looking as fresh as the latest releases ??? for goodness sake !!!

No, not really. Bringing the game up to date in technical terms would mean no PS2 level content anywhere, proper interiors for all cars etc.

In terms of content it's not up to date either with barely any 2010 or 2011 cars.

Wow. I was actually trying to be as nice as possible so no one would give you bad attitude like, "Try searching next time, there are a ton more threads like this."

I was trying to help you out. I EVEN voted to help you out. pshh ship has sailed. tootaloooo.

GT5 has more variety and features than any racing game this gen. Spec 2.0 and DLC has obviously helped.

*This is my opinion only*

Unfortunately, I've got to say no. The whole (offline) game style feels dated. Pick a race from a list, race, collect money and repeat.

I much preferred the map layout from previous GT's. if they had updated that (maybe using Google Earth?) that would have been great.

The racing is also dated. The physics are good, but the AI are 'soulless' and there is no spectacle, no pre race build up or anything really.

I won't go into graphics, they are both the best and terrible at the same time.

Ever since TDU (open world) and Forza (community and customisation) approached things from a different angle, the genre has moved on.

GT 5 is great, but it is dated. Or true to its roots, depends how you look at it I suppose!

I totally disagree.

Myself and countless others are bored of GT5 and it's only been out 10 months. And that's with the whole original Spec 1.0 package.

I fail to see how 1 additional track (ok 2, including this go-kart track) and 15 more cars will double the game's lifespan.

Damage on/off adds nothing to the game.

I don't see how any of the Spec 2 updates make the game more up-to-date or fresh. Nothing about the appearance or content of the game has changed.

GT5 is certainly not dated. The graphics plus physics are at the pinnacle of console racing games.

As for GT5 being a proper simulator, well I cannot agree with that statement as GT5 does not have adjustable tire pressures. Just my thoughts.

Lol. Sorry but that's ridiculous. The reason GT5 isn't a true racing sim is because you can't adjust the tyre psi?!

Holy cow!

They are the pinnacle in part, in others they're atrocious for this generation. You can say you like the standards and the dark interiors as much as you like, it doesn't change the fact they're not up to date graphically.

I assume he means that is just one reason, not the only one.

Thats the most basic tunning option every car must have and changes the handling alot... you can adjust tyre pressure in everyday car and improve handling - braking distancies - fuel consumption, etc, etc, etc...

Holy cow indeed, thats exactly what I though when I realized you couldnt do that in GT5...

Being a updateable game the only thing that will outdate GT5 will be the system it is on. They can add to it till they turn blue in the face. I hope GT5 is playable on the next system or even PC some day. I can dream right. 💡

Now if we had a lively editor there would be good size stack of used Xboxs around. :)

It looks a little dated but not more than it did when it was released 10 months ago. However, the Spa tracks seems to be a graphical level above every other track in the game but Spec 2.0 looks like the same "old" game to me.

Yes/No

Debatable car selection, Lack of livery editor/body mods and driving events make the game dated.

But the visual quality, detain and physics are a cut above the rest.

Interesting poll..

The game itself doesn't look dated, but it's a year old now..

Have you guys bumped your heads? Dated compared to what? Forza?
Have you seen Forzas Nurburgring? Its as wide as a 4 lane highway for gods sake! Forza just still looks too cartoonist to me.
Lets see, what else is there.

Shift 2 Unleashed- Slightly Mad Studios/EA have nothing on PD. This is the 17th installment of the NFS franchise. Though they talk about physics, its too arcadey.

F1 2011- Codemasters tried... Fun game, but frame rates notoriously drop to 15FPS. You can't see the braking zones until your all up in them. Read the forum here about all the issues.

iracing- The best Sim out there I feel. Graphics not as good as GT5 premium.

Dirt 3- Codemasters did a phenomenal job in capturing rally sport. Gameplay was short, and still doesn't compare to GT.

In conclusion I ask what is it we are comparing? You titled it "looking like", so with graphics you can't argue with GT Premium cars. As far as "fresh", GT5 has been the most supported racing game in history. All these seasonals and updates, big or small has been free! It doesn't get much more fresh than that.

Good day gentlemen.

All the little graphic tweeks are what did it for more, now we have no dodgy shadows and the weather looks perfect. The graphics are finally finished in my eyes and GT5 looks class.

Nothing to do with being dated.

I sense a theme developing here....

Ok, but is it as dated? That's the question?

Dirt 3- Codemasters did a phenomenal job in capturing rally sport. Gameplay was short, and still doesn't compare to GT.

And so it shouldn't. It's a rally game. But still, it's a much more modern game than GT5 regarding features and gameplay styles.

You can argue with the standard cars, standard race tracks, limited, old fashioned career mode and various other things though.

As for the updates, the vast majortiy of them have been fixes which have done nothing to affect how dated the game appears. Even the DLC doesn't really improve things, Spa is up to date but where are the 2010 and 2011 cars? Where are the modern gameplay elements featured in many other racing games? Where is the innovation?

So I ask again...

What game(s) make GT5 look dated?

Game wise.

That's not new news. GT5 is so much more than just gaming. The second game I've played the most this gen is GTA4 or inFamous. I love arcade games. I know FM4 has better physics than before and more of a sim now, but it's still an arcade GAME because of its features. There's no fanboy talk here. Forza and NFS games are fun like a game should be.

What makes GT5 outdated? Technologically, it isn't outdated. What other driving game has smoke effects like GT5 (seriously, no smoke accumulates in other games like GT5 and it's not just looks, it's the power GT5 uses of the PS3)? What other game has 24 hrs time change like GT5 (GTA4 but that's what it's SUPPOSED to have and still isn't like GT5's)?
Over 1,000 cars (we're talking about what other games don't have, outdated)? What other racing game has as many racing types and as great a variety of cars? WITH the oldest car in any racing game (dated, GT4 had the oldest car). How many other games have snow and rain that can be played with whenever? How many other racing games have as many steering wheels supported? What other game have exclusive cars? Not GT5. Well, besides the GT by Citroen and the other obvious one that PD got Adrian Newey and Sebastian Vettel for their input and expertise.

Hmmm... Games I played the most this gen in order of time most played: inFamous, GTAIV, and.....

The street lights go far back, I never really looked at those. Damn they couldn't show the whole city lit up? Lazy

Unless it's rFactor Pro or iRacing, in games (and I use the word game in all its intent and purpose) like Forza and GT, the physics are not complex enough to actually distinguish between tire pressure and spring load ie. suspension adjustment. So when games like SHIFT or Forza include tire pressure as part of it physics, it's basically using the same perimeter as suspension adjustment since both have pneumatic/elastic values. It's basically just another added layers accomplishing the same thing.

This ^^^^^. I cant believe there are so many whingers when PD rushed a game out because Sony say so, And PD then have done more updates and corrections than the rest. Shift is a joke still waiting for a patch to stop the freezing.
Graphicks wise PD are uncatchable on the newer tracks, Older one s are ingame to boost selection. Now lets see what Spa looks like.

I think the only way GT5 looks outdated is in the GT Life mode. Its a very old and very rigid design with absolutely has no room for being dynamic.

Its the one area (apart from the obvious "standards" argument) which PD really need to overhaul.

That said, when they finally get round to doing this, they need to be careful about finding a balance. Other games tend to go to far just so they can say high numbers to impress people. Unfortunately, its overkill as they haven't got the content (tracks) to match. Racing the same few fictional tracks constantly with atrocious track layouts gets boring fast.

If PD can update their options and add a campaign with a little bit of dynamic flair, coupled with their level of attention to detail and class, the GT games will be an un-rivalled force noone could come close to matching.

So I ask again...

What game(s) make GT5 look dated?

Plenty of them, including ones you mentioned. You have to look at the games on thier own basis over time, not in comparison to GT5. Take Dirt 3 as one example, that started life as Colin McRae rally and look at it now, tons of new features, new ideas, the career modes are overhauled and done differently in each game. Need For Speed, yes they usually all suck but they've moved with the times, again they've innovated with different ideas for career modes, new ideas to bring them to life.

Now think about this, look at GT1 as a game and GT5. Forget the obvious graphical updates, how has the core gameplay changed and innovated? It really hasn't at all, still the same 'career' mode, the same arcade mode. It's added things like photomode and of course the physics have improved and online has been added. But the core gameplay mechanics are very dated now, there isn't any innovation or new, exciting additions. I mean what was the 'new' change of GT5's career mode, how did they innovate there? A broken levelling/XP system. Apart from that, nothing.

The events are even have the same names as GT1/2. How many more games are you going to want to drive the Sunday Cup in 90hp Japanese cars?

All the little graphic tweeks are what did it for more, now we have no dodgy shadows and the weather looks perfect. The graphics are finally finished in my eyes and GT5 looks class.

minus the alpha smoke/spray effects which make bumpers look like a pixelated mess

^^^^ that's been improved on since the start.

NOW

Back on topic

Cool. So it's outdated in the gaming department.

I can live with that.

For a second there I thought.... well, yea.
