At work so don't have all the specs with me.
Recently upgraded my graphics card from a GT240 to a Gigabyte 650 Ti.
Current specs of computer are:
Asus M4a78LT-M LE motherboard
Tri-core AMD 3.6ghz processor (don't remember model number)
8GB Kingston Memory (1600)
Seagate hard drives
Cooler master case
400W Cooler master Elite Power supply (One that came with case)
Windows 7 home premium 64-bit (all updates)
Acer 24" Monitor hooked up DVI.
No overclocking.
Never had any issues with my old gfx card, and the few games I play (Iracing, Simraceway, & Diablo 3) ran fine.
So upgrade my GFX card to the 650Ti, and at same time replaced/added a few more case fans. Temperatures on CPU/Motherboard were fine, but I just wanted them a bit cooler. Once again no issues before.
At the time I installed the 650Ti I was into playing Simraceway. Most of the time it ran without any problems whatsoever on the new card. However once in a while (maybe one out of 15/20) times and some random point in simraceway, my computer would restart. However when restarting I wouldn't have a display, I'd have to turn off computer and turn it back on. The computer would boot into windows, just without display. I verified with logmein.
At this same time I tried out Auto Club Revolution and there I would maybe get one race before crashing on the next race. Talked to ACR support and pretty much got an answer of "It's hardware or your overheating"
Always keep my computer as dust free as possible. So by this time I had migrated back to iracing. Still would have the occasional crash. Maybe 1 out of 5 races/practices/qualifiying I would crash the same way as described before.
So I begin looking more deeply.
Setup HWINfo to log my temperatures and GPU/CPU usage. Did that and got a crash in iracing. Check the logs, temperatures look in the norm and usage looked normal as any other day.
Don't have the logs with me, but I think my GPU would max out at 60c, but most times would stay between 50-55. Can't remember what my CPU was. But was within normal limits and I'm not overheating.
At that point I was using a mis-matched speed of memory. One 1600 and one 1333. I fixed that. Same problem.
Using a power supply calculator my existing 400W should have enough juice to run, but I had a 600W OCZ PSU Sitting new in box at work that I could try. Hooked that in and same result.
I could never FORCE a crash to happen, and usually would always happen at the end of the race, or at the beginning. basically I wasn't around anyone or anywhere where I would experience more "Stress" on my gpu from other cars around.
*So I updated my gfx drivers(twice)...same result.
*Toned down my Iracing gfx settings. Was before averaging about 120-150 fps on one monitor, and dialed down to a locked 84fps.....same result.
*Check Windows Event Viewer for signs of application crashes...nothing really I think there was a dropbox crashed, but just un-installed it.
*Toned down my running applications. Usually running in system tray were:
Antivirus--Tried Avast, Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials, and no AV.
Backup--Cobain Backup
DropBox
Logmein
Logitech Profiler---DFGT program
****-tone---tone notification for Iracing
Trading paints---using custom skins in iracing.
Had none of those programs start...same result
*Check both drives for errors (Have two mechanical seagate drives, and using long seatools testing, both came back no problems.)
*Ran Memory Check utility for two days with no problems.
So at that point started support ticket with gigabyte it's still under warranty, but if it was something fixable on my end I'd rather do that then wait on a RMA return.
They were no help. Basically left open for me to return the card for a replacement.
Realistically the only thing left for me to try is a fresh install of windows. Honestly though I don't see that as fixing it.
Went back to my existing card the 240 and haven't had one problem with it.
I work as an IT Manager and everything tells me it's the card.
Have I missed anything?
Thanks for reading.
