Hey all.

I use a 50" 4:3 Toshiba rear projection television, with 1080i support. It accepts the 1080i signal from my PS3. However, since the TV is 4:3, there is an option within my television to squeeze the HD signal down to 16:9.

That was all just for background info. MY problem is that though the aspect ratio is correct, I cannot see the entire screen. I am missing a fair bit from all edges.

I see that there is a SD display size option, but since I am in HD, the option is grayed out.

I also play MGS4, and I know there I can zoom out in the display options, and see the entire screen in HD mode, but that option doesn't exist in GT5:P, or does it?

Any advice is much appreciated.

I also have a toshiba rear projection.
your tv should have a "1080i picture option" (mine does at least) (it should be in the menu -> theater or something)
itll change the aspect ratio by creating 2 black lines, one on top and the other on the bottom.
however, i have a feeling you're going to be affected by some overscan (like me)...
hope this helps

Well, at least now I know it won't adversely affect my driving :). Thanks Timppaq!

:) ..after you get used to it, it's difficult to adjust when seeing the whole screen area. Easy to miss your brakingpoints. And cool to see those mirrors! ;) :)

Same problem here with a Panasonic PT 1080i 47" rear projector. I can't see the mirrors, or my position, or a whole bunch of other stuff. I've been told it's overscan. I bought the service manual for my TV, but I'm scared to death to try and fix it, don't want to make it worse. My TV is far too dark as well, can't drive in-car because I can't see the guages in most cars.

Yeah, but Timppaq suffers from that rare condition: "Tunnel-Vision-High-Speed-Driving-Syndrome". It's sad really... :(

oops, sorry i didnt fully read your question lol
you're dealing with overscan
the only thing you can do is get the service manual and try and tackle the problem yourself or all a technician..

Some of you are confusing this issue. This is NOT an overscan issue, this is an "aspect ratio" issue. I have a total of 3 HD compliant devices which are 4x3 ratio but only one which is 16x9 ratio. What you guys need to do is set your devices to display a 16x9 ratio image via. the "letterbox" method if your display device supports it. You'll get a black bar at the top and bottom of your image, but you'll be able to see everything.

It is very annoying that Sony hasn't included the option to display a 4x3 ratio HD image from the PS3. GT4 had that option on the PS2 and it worked great. There is a LOT of older HD-compatible equipment which was 4x3.

OP mentioned he changed his TV aspect to 16:9
I have the exact same problem, I have the two black bars at the top and bottom but a good inch from each side is cut off from because of overscan

i have a 28" 1900x1200 ViewSonic flatscreen but i cannot see the mirrors either when in-car camera is selected... do i have the same problem? i do have all the other stuff like lap times etc though...

Definitely sounds like overscan to me - to fear the service menu is normal for most but if you are careful you could resolve this problem by eliminating the overscan completely. I think I went into the service menu of my Panasonic RPTV long before the warranty ran out with no real adverse effects. If you decide to do it, just make sure you right down whatever the setting is before you adjust it so you can go back and reset it if need be. I can't remember the number of times I went into the service menu on mine and completely re-did the convergence - talk about something that will drive you mad and completely mess up your vision. Good Luck!

Its probably because your TV is not TRUE 16:9! It's actually 4:3 and then re-scaling the image to 16:9.

Hook it up to a TV that has a native aspect ratio of 16:9 and you'll see the problem is gone.

Is/was there anywhere outside of North America where 4:3 ratio HD TV's were sold?

Since i'm the youngest out of my the three brothers, i'd finally brought our first HDTV.

The SAMSUNG 40" 6 series /// Its the BEST!!! 100hz & whopping 50,000 contrast.
Bargain too.

It IS overscan, because I just fixed mine via the service menus. I wouldn't call it fun, but it's doable.
