Well, I've started looking for a HD upgrade, not that I can say that I really need it but it'd be nice to get the loading times reduced if possible.

So, question is, anyone know if it's possible to use any of the MTRON Pro drives?
I've been trying to find information for a good couple of hours now but so far, no luck.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I've been thinking the same thing for a while now. I think you and I might have to wait a year or two, though, before it's supported by the PS3, not to mention affordable... Would be pretty sweet: tradeoff for lengthy install times to get rid of load times altogether for games stored on the DD (like GT5)...

As Solid State disks behave exactly like a regular SATA drive, I have no doubt it'll work just fine - And lose some heat in the PS3 while you're at it..

I've been reading quite a bit the last.. ten-ish hours. Looks like some people think that having a too fast drive could result in a lower performance overall of the PS3.. ? That makes no sense to me at all.
Disk ordered anyways. Hopefully It'll work, otherwise i can always use it as a spoon. :scared::dunce:

Why would a fast drive slow the PS3 down ?... I call BS on that one !..

Keep us posted on the SSD !...

Well, their reasoning goes something like this. "The PS3 has gotz a 5400 disk and faster disks will kill the PS3 and haunt you for the rest of your life."

I've seen people use 3.5" ones but having the HD externally doesn't sound all that exciting.
Will of course update.. And pray.

I love the way the guy goes in the video… if your rooms dirty.. CLEAN IT!

Just gave me an A team Mr T moment.... if your rooms dirty..... clean it YOU FOOL!

I swear I posted in here complaining about how SSDs are nowhere near worth the price. Since I didn't....

SSD drives really aren't worth their price at all except in particular laptop uses. The money would be better spent on a 250GB 7200rpm drive or even just 5400rpm.

QFT. Solid states are great for laptops or Mp3 players because they resist vibrations and shocks quite a bit. So if you drop your laptop or ipod, it doesn't cease to function because there are no moving parts. That is virtually the only advantage they have at the moment, which is more than countered by the price deficit they have. I don't think data read/write speeds are actually that much higher than a 7200 RPM drive, if at all.

Loading times do decrease with 7200rpm drives but they can also increase the temperature of the PS3 which is something I don't want.
I see no reason as to why they'd design the PS3 to throttle the HD. Even if the motherboard on the PS3 does have a "speed cap" or whatever the disk will still load faster due to the access time.

But you are right, no one knows that it will (me included) perform even close to what it does on the nVidia board.
However, take two 2.5" HD's. One SSD and one "normal" 2.5". Benchmark them on _any_ motherboard (I'm actually gonna bench the SSD against the Seagate) and see what the results are. Then I'll do some testing on the PS3 as well though I'm rather confident what the results will be. :P

Reason why i wanted the SSD disk in the first place was to have a faster HD. Not a bigger one.

The PS3 has no problems operating in a sauna at 120F for like 72 hours. A 7200rpm drive isn't going to affect it at all.

Hopefully the disk will arrive tomorrow.
Got a question here though, good titles to test loading times on? I. Haven't really got a single game for the PS3 yet. Or are there any demos that could be better for comparison? I kind of wanted GT5: Prologue to be the first game I bought for the machine.

I would try out assassins creed, it installs a fairly large file on the HDD and still has a long initial load, it would be interesting to see if this affects either the install time or loading time of the game at all.

GT5 Prologue is the best as it runs totally off the HDD, theres also Warhawk, failing that any huge demo should do... I want to know if the OS loads faster also (like when turning it on).... If you could do a Youtube video comparison or something it would be great!

Do you guys think it would make any difference to Folding at Home's speed or is that really nothing to do with the HDD?

Really can't wait to see a solid state run PS3!!!!

It's unlikely that F@H will change at all, but Unreal Tourney III has an option to install a lot of data to the HDD, maps and such, that'd be a good game to test on.

Lovely, thanks. I'll be sure to rob my nephew of it for a day or 20..

Well, I've decided to wait for the PAL release of GT5:P. Stubborn, I know. :D

I haven't.. Got any real way to record at I think. My capture card is .. somewhere far far away and no, I'm not really the webcam-kinda guy. :P
I think I can record with my camera but not sure if it's gonna be possible to see anything. I'll mess around with it as soon as I get it though. That's a promise.

Folding? Naaah, don't see how that can get improved since it's mainly using the CPU.

It did stop for a split second when i formatted the disk however and during this half second I think I was dead. It's formatted. ^ ^

Nice little thing these disks. Will first try it out on the PC for some comparison to my 3.5" disks then toss it in the PS3 for some more testing later tonight. Only got Assassins Creed though but. Got to start somewhere.

Well, good luck. It should make a huge difference to any IO bound process. I read a review on Tom's Hardware last week which showed that the latest SSD is more than twice as fast as even a 15000 rpm disk.

It's.. Very very fast. I can say that much. At least when loading levels. I've tested it on F.E.A.R and it took somewhere around half the time it took on my Raptor x disk.
Gonna try to .. get a hold of PC mark and see how that compares. Uninstalling/reinstalling games are definitely not all that much fun. After I've done that I'm tossing it in the PS3.

Edit: Well, I wrote a long post here with details of what I thought about it in the PC so far but of course I closed the Firefox window ... So imagine that post above, but roughly five times more detailed and covering.. Just picture it!

Well, I'll say this much. It is faster. Only place you can really feel it in though is when loading times are long. I'm looking forward to test Prologue on it though since it's only using the HD. Feels like a nice decrease in loading times overall but it's only really noticeable on the longer loads. If that makes any sense.

To be totally honest though, it's not worth it, not yet anyways.

I'm only gonna have GT5/GT5:Prologue on the HD so I won't really need more space then what I've got. But most people are sane and don't buy a PS3 for one title.

Yes, I did just call some of you insane. And we are. 👍
