I am a big projector fan and i was wondering what would be better for a sim racer? the 42"HD TV (plasma) or a DLP projector ( both run about $2,500 USD) Let's say you have a cockpit... would u choose the plasma with it's super high def. or the projector, projecting a life size image of the track.

You need a LOT of room to get a picture that big from a projector, the projector has to be well back from the screen, and I would venture to say that a $2500 projector won't do it anyway unless it's really dark in the room. And while the picture is recognizable from a projector, I've never seen one from behind a screen like that one is that gave true correct colors and good contrast. I'd go with a real set, whether it's plasma, LCD, rear-projection, CRT, all of which are brighter, sharper, truer, and take less space.

Giant, 60+ inch plasma TV. Same as wfooshee, and if you get one big enough, it will be life size anyway. My friend has one, its ginormous.

A 60" plasma TV is at least $5000. :dunce:

But I'd get a plasma TV anyway, for the reasons listed in wfooshee's post.

LCD. Pasma's have an issue with burn-in. You don't need a ghost of a speedometer on your screen while you are watching Dumb and Dumber.

I hooked up a projector at my aunts restaurant, and it was a Epson Satelite S3 ($800 at the time) and from about 8-10 ft. from the wall i got about 100" on the size and i don't think the one above is that much bigger. Also i wasen't refering to rear projection, it's that i could only find that pic. Well the projector itself take no room whatsoever compared to the old big screens, but i think in any reasonably sized living room, u can get a picture that big

A week before i installed the projector i borrowed it from my aunt for a couple of days. We played Halo 2, four players, and each screen was about 40" and this was inside my not so big bedroom +the quality seemed exceptional, specially for a cheap projector. Maybe i am saying all this because i never played any game in a high def. tv. i guess i am going to have to try it out, but i am still leaning towards the projector.

thanx for all comments:tup:

1 A/V out

Tell me what u guys think.

(On GT4 it has the 1080i option, to get that on my TV i just have to hook it up through component and set it to 1080i on GT4 and it will change?)

in long run lcd or plasma is cheaper, usually projector lamp has to be replaced every 3000-5000 hours or so(same for most rear projection tvs). For games lcd has edge over some plasma ,because some plasmas suffer from "burn-in"(permanent ghost image caused by continuos static objects on screen).
Drowbacks of lcds have been poor contrast ratio and responce time.
In upcoming months we will see new bread of 1080p lcd´s that have as low as 4ms responce time and contrast ratio up to 1:10000 dynamic and 1:2000 static.
Im waiting for those.

I have a projector in one of our rooms, we've set it up like a cinema, it's more for movies than games but sometimes if a few lads are round we hook the XBox upto it and play Pro Evo.

The lamp on my projector lasts 3000 hours before needing replacing, a replacment lamp is about 150 pounds but one lamp will last over 3 years for me.

what exactly is that? :dunce: (i'm learning)

response time means "lag" or time that will take inside panel to react changes in signal or in other sence time between two pictures.
High responce time can cause ghostinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghosting_%28television%29
You can convert response time to frequency (Hz) solving F from
F=1/T where T is response time in seconds.

Example : if we have a panel of 4 ms(4*10^-3 s) we can equal it to F=1/(4*10^-4) normal(crt) so F gives us 250 Hz which would be quite fast for CRT

so 8ms ->125 Hz
So 8ms would realy enough but sadly some 8ms claimed panels are about 20-30 ms.
Usually "8ms" means grey to grey time,so other transitions can be anything.

So 4ms is likely not 4ms in all transitions, but it sure is faster than "8ms" panels

ps:i have pc monitor(lcd) with claimed responcetime of 2ms. in Reality its always around 6ms and im very pleased .

Im sorry about my "bad" english.

did this enlighten the response time concept (i typod responce previously) ?

You don't need a lot of room, I can get a 5ft wide image with my projector being just 7ft away and the image get's bigger fast as you move the projector further back, you need a minimum of about 5ft, that'll give you an image about the size of a 42" tv (3ft-ish wide I think). As for image quality, a good prokector can offer fantastic quality pictures not as good as HD TV's perhaps but they are good. The downside is that you need to be in a dark room for a projector to work well. For a cockpit though I'd go for a TV, however I'm a big supporter of projectors.

sum up: If you watch from "close" distance get 32"->46" lcd or plasma
If want big screen and dont want to robb a bank get a projector.
If you want absolut "best performance" get big rear projection tv.

i personaly prefer lcd and i think LCDs are way of the future in flatpanel tvs.
LCDs are also slowly gaining ground in projector market.

i would wait, but here in brazil i would have to wait 2 more years for that. we dont even have a TV that does 1080p yet. i'll just get the samsung for now. 👍

His question was about life size, and my response was for a picture that big. Agreed, for a picture about the same size as you're used to from a TV you don't need that much space. This is the same as going all the way back to my childhood days, when we had an 8mm home movie projector; further back is bigger but dimmer.

That's what I'm talking about, 7ft distance is nothing, and that will give you a picture as big as a large TV, 8ft will give you a picture over 1ft wider, 9ft will be over 1ft wider still. My projector is in position where it can display a picture over 8ft wide and it's only 10ft away fromt he screen. 10ft is not a lot of room.

on the plama , how long does it take for an image to get "burnt in" the plasma display? ex: the TV is going to be in my office/TV room and if i just want to sit back with a wireless keyboard/mouse and work on Photoshop (VGA input), will that image start to burn into my TV ?

Aren't SED sets and Laser TVs going to be out in like 6 months? I'm not in the market for a new 80 inch television, but if I were I think I'd definitely wait to see what the deal is with these new technologies.

Yes, SED's are, they'll be a lot better and more reliable than Plasma's and have a proper field of view unlike LCD. I'm not too up on laser TV's they look like they will be great but I don't know what the prices are expected to be or much else about them.

Yeah, but just having newer options should in turn lower the prices of plasmas and current technologies.

I'm just so excited that we're going to have TVs with lasers. LASERS!

thanx for all posts 👍

(looking up SED tv's)

edit: from what i understood reading on wikipedia is that a HDTV that does 1080i with progresive scan can display a 1080p image, from something transmiting a 1080p signal, is this right?

it can display it but not in 1080p mode. But as you said tv has to have "support" for 1080p (progressive scan).

Yep it'll downscale the image to another resolution.

?question? Can i watch the basic channels (not digital) on the plasma TV with just an antena? or do i need cable or satelite?
