HDTV-PS2 Incompatibility?

I have a new 42" Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection HDTV. I got this set solely to run GT4. It is used for nothing else. The HD inputs on the back are Y Pb Pr.
My PS2 manual states: "This product is compatible for use with component video inputs (Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr), but cannot be used with inputs in HDTV format (Y Pb Pr)."
When I hook up my Monster component cables and swtich to 10801 in the GT4 options menu, the cars get a little better but the rest of the picture is still pretty jagged. As nuts as it may sound, it seems as if I'm getting a touch of HD in the cars but not much else.
To run GT4 in HD on my TV do I have to wait for the PS3 and hope it will accept the HD inputs on the back of the TV? Or is there some magic switch box that will work with my HDTV and the PS2? Does GT4 only run in HD with the PS2 on older TVs that have the Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr inputs? Or am I missing something obvious? This is a great site. Thanks a lot of your help.

i run monster cable component cables also and its amazing. i just didnt turn it to 1080i. that might be your problem, just have it at normal settings, i think the component video is more than enough, are you using fibre optic also?

weird... on a 28" widescreen HDTV, i used the regular, optional component cables for PS2... the PS2, itself, was set to run 16:9 and component... then i set the game to 16:9 and 1080i... and i been droolin over the extra clear shininess with serious wood ever since... 👍

one would assume that mating the Sony and Sony stuff would come off without a hitch, huh...? hopefully it was just one small step that was left out... good luck with that... :dopey:

The backgrounds are never gonna look super good in GT4, because it is not true 1080i I believe, at least thats what I've read...
It's just upscaled from 480i. It's not "true" High-definition, but it looks pretty damn good.

I have no idea what "This product is compatible for use with component video inputs (Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr), but cannot be used with inputs in HDTV format (Y Pb Pr)" means in the slightest. I have two Hi-scan (Sony's name for wide-band "HDTV" component inputs) inputs on my Sony XBR Wega HDTV set, and it works fine for four years. I also a high freq component video switcher being used with it, and that works fine.

I'm at a loss...

No HDMI till PS3 which is a shame, I just use the standard component inputs red/blue/green cables, I think I am running Van Den Hul, plugged straight into my BeoVision, set to 480i, and I'm a happy man. Well till we get 1080i HDMI on the PS3

I use component cables and set it to 480p. I can't stand the shakiness at the beginning of every race and sometimes in between when using 480i/1080i. I can't wait for the GT5 for the PS3. HDMI and hopefully true high definition, that would be a sweet looking game.

If you've gone to the Screen section of the Options menu in the game and selected 1080i, then it's HD. You don't actually have to set the PS2 hardware configuration to anything, just set the Screen Options in-game to 16:9 and 1080i, and as pointed out elsewhere many times, you have to set 1080i every time you start the game, and 1080i (or 480p) is only during the racing (and replays); menus, garage, etc. are 480i.
There are jaggies in the backgrounds at all resolutions, because no anti-aliasing is done except on the cars themselves. In certain situations, the moire patterns that result in the backgrounds are stronger in the higher-res display. However, cars and nearby environment textures are vastly superior to 480i display. If you play for a while at 1080i and try to go back, you WILL see the difference.
On mine, the "shakes" mentioned earlier are worse on 480i than on 1080i.

I've just got back into GT4, because I've got a new screen (Dell 24") and its easier to set the PS2 up now. Anyway, I don't have any 1080i option in the menu. I'm in the UK with the UK version of GT4, the PS2 is connected with component cables (GAME own brand, couldn't find Sony cables). Any idea why i cant get 1080i?

1080i is in NTSC version only.

Call me an idiot but I never figured out how to use HDTV on my PSP. :dunce:

Can anyone help me? My TV is HD compitable but I only use the standart Yellow/White/Red cables. What cables should I use for HDTV? How does it work?:scared:
