Has Polyphony Digital ever explained why head tracking isn't available across all game modes? I'm currently wondering if a wider support of this feauture can be patched in and whether it is realistic to expect such an update for Gran Turismo 5.

I have no problems tracking my head. Its always on my shoulders.
I have no need of a tracking device.

This feature is actually in A-spec. But the only mode is Drift mode. Kaz said that the feature was not able to be implemented into any part of A-spec....... yeah right Kaz. If you actually did Q&A then you would realize it is in A-spec but just not all of it.

Some of that good ol' quality play testing.

But I use the feature, I think it is pretty cool. Which makes me wish they would open it up to all of A-spec.But the room has to be lit really well.

I own the PS Eye. It is great by the way.

also i can use it on my PC with specific drivers and can do more things too. Works almost as good as Track IR which is the motion sensor used for PC simulators.

As Kazunori Yamauchi explained by himself in one of his Twitter-escapades, head-tracking in GT5 is limited to Arcade mode because of the insufficient RAM in PS3.

It will probably never be patched, because of the above reason.

We can probably expect a real implementation of it with the next-gen GT game.

With glasses, long hair and very varied lighting conditions at my ps3, it doesn't really work for me whatsoever.

Too bad, I guess we're up for a long wait then. Thanks for making that clear.

Wait, what's head tracking? I've never heard of it.

This should explain:

Yeah I have the PS3 Move with an Eye and when I have it set up, it work just fine with my GT5.

Too bad Arcade mode doesn't pay credits and XP :(

Head tracking would definitely be interesting, but really not practical. I'm sure most of you guys don't usually play in cockpit mode, and it's the same kind of thing. Unless you're actually sitting in a car, it will only make matters more confusing. Oh and if there is more than 1 person in the room, humble onlookers will be considerably disoriented.

The only time I used head tracking was by mistake. I was driving the Zonda using the cockpit camera thinking I didn't remember the view in the car being so bad (I was leaning to the left so the windshield pillar seemed like it was almost centered on my screen). Followed by that I took a drive in the Ferrari F1 2007 model and I could barely see over the wheel due to slouching in my seat.
Finally realized it was the PlayStation camera that was the culprit.
It is pretty cool that it detects up, down, and side to side along with just looking left and right.

Whenever possible I always use the interior view and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. Head tracking might be a little confusing at first but with experience it should be quite useful.

I have also thought of the possibility to have free camera movement without the PS Eye detecting any movmeent. I play with a DS3 controller and can only imagine that R3 would be perfect for this. At this point we only have four fixed angles for the interior view but it feels a bit too stiff.

Can it be combined with triple screen mode?

It doesn't make very much sense to combine the two. You have a large viewing angle so you can look left and right on three screens. Head tracking is normally there as a temporary solution to those without triple-screens.

It is also in drift mode. A-spec.

If i had to take an educated guess id say that with the 512mb memory that the playstation 3 has head tracking whilst in modes such as online is just pushing the limits a bit too far, GT5 is already taxing the PS3's limited memory.

I'm in the same boat as GODfreyGT5. The PS3 can't tell where my face is with glasses on [Even Sony 3D glasses].

Fun gimmick when it works but strange to turn your head left and look to the right.

Does anyone know if GT supports mouse function?

One game, (Birds of Steel) lets the player use a mouse for looking around in the cockpit. You can even use a Air Mouse and put it on your hat to look around like Track IR.

Unfortunately the PS3 has 256mb's of RAM, which is the sole reason for so many headaches PD have faced. 512mb's would have been a blessing to all developers.

I never cared for head tracking. Never seemed to work very good.

Yh i know what your saying, but to clarify it has 256mg of video memory and 256mg of main, whatever way you look at it, its short of what it needs, why they spent a fortune on the cell processor and skimped like they did on somthing as cheap as RAM ill never know.
