Height of Wheel?

Hey Guys n Gals

Hope your all having a nice Friday. TGIF to those at work like myself.

Ive been adjusting my chair at work so that its more comfortable at the desk, and it made me wonder about the height of the wheel i use when playing GT5.

Is there a correct height it should be like chest height or something?. I use a wheelstand pro, so adjusting that isnt going to be a problem if i need to.

Mine is kinda high and i slouch back in my chair when playing, maybe shoulder high. Its pretty comfy to me, yet im guessing its not right for some reason.

Anyone got any info regards this.?.

Well on my Playseat Evo I have my G25 at about chest height. when I rest my thumbs on the spokes my hands are just above my elbows so just over 90 degrees. It's comfy enough for me.
 
Just like in real life it is personal preference.

Some people like to hug the steering wheel others like to cruise in a deck chair.

Though to answer your question.
The bottom of my g25 is 22 inches from the floor with my seat 11 inches from the floor.

Best practice, for real life anyway, is to have a slight bend at the elbow and knees even when fully depressing the clutch. However I don't think there is much chance of you breaking your legs crashing in gt5.

That was pretty much the formula I used when setting up my Playseat:tup:

Sometimes I think I would like the wheel a little higher and further away but I a short guy 5' 6" so there isn't much room left to move the wheel any further away.

None the less I can sit and drive for hours on end in it so I guess if it was poorly positioned I would have felt it by now.
 
I like to cruise in a deck chair so to speak, so i think its pretty ok as it is.

Its just that sometimes the wheelstand pro gets in the way. The part the wheel attaches to, and goes between the legs?.

When breaking (i right foot break and acel) the pole just bugs me, which leads me to believe ive got something set up wrong.

Well without a real cockpit your never going to get the perfect racing posture. With ignoring the seating angles and your lower half of your body, I would go out to your vehicle, sit down, get comfortable, and note where your steering wheel is. That's what I did when making my cockpit and it came out pretty close. It's always nice to have a familiar feel when you drive... games too.
 
I would disagree that you can not get the proper position without a real cockpit. I am using a high back office chair that reclines slightly and I built a wodden platform for my pedal assembly which is raised and angled for comfort. I have a U-Shaped desk which I was able to add a cross member to with the aid of a couple of quick grips I can remove it and put it back in a flash. The wheel mounts to this and can be adjusted left/right forward/back and even up/down with the aide of 2 spacers.

The final result is when I am racing it feels very much like my 2001 Mustang and I like it very much. Would be hard to do better with an expenisve cockpit and the one I am using takes up almost no space when not in use.


Edit: Actually I built two pedal mounts first for the DFGT and then later another one for the PWTS. This is also the reason for the spacers as originaly I designed the detachable cross member for the DFGT and when I got the PWTS if need to be lowered by about and inch so by using spacers and a different pedal mount I can use the system for either wheel and pedal set with abotu a 5 minute change over time.

Works well and I did it with materials I already had on hand so the cost is perfect. :)

LOL you basically built a cockpit. Anything modified to me is a cockpit, it just depends on how far you want to go. You can buy one, build one, or you can modify what you have. They are all cockpits, but if you just slap your wheel on a desk and pull up a chair then you will likely never get the right posture.

True. It just looks like a PC workstation with a 37 inch monitor :D
At least it does when the wheel is set aside.

The most important thing I think is that you are comfortable while racing for extended periods. The wrong heights or angles can cause leg cramps and/or back pain.

Yeah post a pic with the wheel on and all your goodies, and I'd like to see ya explain to a women how it's not a cockpit.:)

I would but I find that I have not cleaned the room since GT5 was released and it is quite the mess at the moment :dunce:
