I've just got a GT2, first Fanatec product I've owned.

Problem is that when the wheel is turned on it makes a whining noise. It starts during calibration & will not go away.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Figured it out. It's the noise of the fans in permanently on mode (sounds broken to me). Anyone know where I can get some silent replacement fans?

Here's how to turn them off; fire up the wheel & as soon as it stops spinning hit all 4 lower buttons on the right & left side of wheel. It then goes into a mode where it tells you the firmware & turns the fans either constantly on, or just on when the wheel is getting hot.

Really user unfriendly this GT2. Don't like it much I have to say!

Did you buy it new or second hand?

Mine defaulted to the fan only coming on when warm, and came with a paper manual in the box....

Mine was second hand & was set to fans on all the time. How loud are the fans on your GT2 when they come on?

Since I haven't taken it out of the box in a year and a half.... From memory I recall the fan noise being quite high pitched. Not very loud but still quite audible, since it's more of a fan whine than an air flow noise. But it was never loud enough to irritate me, certainly not a problem over audio from the race sim.

The louder the fans, the more I'd want them on all the time. Reason? The brain eventually tunes the sound out if ever-present. Switching on and off, the sound would bother my much more.

Also, it's possible to have no screws holding the top piece of the base casing on, and remove it when the wheel's in use. It sits fairly neatly back on when not in use. It's quite a confined little space in there, so it needs all the help it can get for it's futile attempts to stave off heat build up. Be aware that as it heats up your ffb will fade, so we're talking about performance as well as reliability here.

If you do open it up, use an angled screwdriver to get to the awkwardly positioned screw just behind the wheel rim. Saves you taking off the whole wheel in the way that Youtube guides suggest. Also worth seeing if you can thin out some of the usually excessive and claggy lubes they use, once open. This will help with drag levels, which will help heat levels, which will help ffb fade time, and also help the ffb feel more detailed and informative.

I've owned a Logitech G25 for 6 years now, never heard any fan noise from it, never had any overheating issues either. Can run it for 5 hours straight with no loss of FFB. This GT2 wheel is utter trash in comparison, & useless in Project CARS for now (which is the only reason I bought it in the first place). That's the last Fanatec product I'll ever buy!

I did open it up last night, didn't have an angled Allen Key short enough, had to take the rim off, no biggie. Got the specs for the fans & am looking for some silent replacements, but finding any replacements at all is very hard going indeed!

The GT2 has a few benefits over the G25 to me: you could play Forza with it on Xbox 360, the alcantara rim is nice, as is the 30cm diameter. And now it also works in pCARS on PS4, albeit with issues. It is also very smooth, none of the cog rattle of the G25.

If you want a G25 type experience, I advise you to turn on drift mode: at least 3, maybe up to 5. That comes with disadvantages in that the wheel can overshoot, but it makes it much easier to spin. Also reduce DPR and SPR on wheel to -3, that will free things up too. Finally ALWAYS use 100% FOR on wheel, since any lower acts not as a linear scaling but as a force maximum limiter. You get less dynamic range with less than 100%, which is obviously not good. Lower force settings in game instead.

Hope this helped :)

P.S. I ran my GT2 for two years in Forza 3-4 and GT5. As soon as it was announced not to be compatible with Forza 5 on the Xbox One I shelved mine and bought a T500 for PS3/PS4 and didn't look back. Some guys love the smoothness but personally I never really got on with the sluggishness and the rim ergonomics.

Can't feel any cog rattle in my G25. GT2 feels sluggish to me by comparison. DPR & SPR are both set to 0, FFB is on 100. Tried Drift Mode, hated it, felt like GT5 with power steering on. Alcantara feels cheap to me, not as nice as real leather on G25. Really not impressed, & don't like it much. Maybe I'll get used to it if SMS iron out the bugs in Project CARS. At the moment I don't even wanna plug it in to my PS4.

The whole Project CARS & Fanatec experience has been a total washout for me. Not a happy chappy at the moment.
