Help! I can't drift. :(

Hey folks,

Thanks to those who have posted their steering wheel/DS3 settings. I'm starting to really enjoy Shift 2. However, I can't seem to drift. Does anyone have any advice other than Vaughn's schtick. By the way, my steering is set to 900 degrees for drift right now.

God dont say that, I have the game on order.
Got rid of SHIFT 1 after finding out I hated the car controls.

Was hoping SHIFT2 was better.
 
What car are you using. Personally I started with the Mazda RX-8 one that they give me but now I am using this. It has helped me a lot and hopefully it helps you too 👍
 
Yeah, you could probably try the controller. It seems pretty easy to get the hang of drifting with a controller. I'm sure most cars are easy to drift with once you get the feel of it. I say pick a car and try and stick with it and you will pick up drifting in the game in no time with practice.

I use an almost fully tuned S13 and it handles great. I even set some world records on a couple drift events with it.
 
Really can't abide having a second drift physic at the best of times, but for the love of all that is holy, if they wanted to have one, why the heck didn't they use Hot Pursuit's handling model. The one in this game is painful (360 with pad). As soon as you want to throw the car the other way, the pendulum effect kicks in, which is fine, but the car gets an instant speed boost that's uncontrollable with the input lag.

I find it fun with the controller, I want to drift with my DFGT but I don't have the time to practice that much or patience for that matter .lol
 
I tried doing the drift events to try them out, but I can't even get passed Vaughn's "tutorials." I tried multiple times on my DFP and DS3. I hate that Vaughn guy...what a prick.

Anyway, I was just using the Drift Alliance 240...
 
Best tip is once you initiate the slide, feather both the throttle and steering. Normally this will hold the slide. When straightening, relax all controls and again feather the throttle until you reach the next corner, as there's no rush. Still bloody hard though.

I'd love to know if any of the devs have ever driven a car, much less drifted one. The drift physics are terrible, but hugely satisfying if you nail it. The drift part has to be a joke as it's nothing at all like real life.
 
My car seems to just spin out if you turn the wheel above 10mph. I've had it litterally spin out at 15mph while trying to get going in a straight line, and i'm not talking about ramming the throttle, you don't need any throttle for it to spin out.

I've done 60% of the game on hard difficulty with elite settings, but i cannot drift in this game it is completely broken.

I hear people have better luck driving with the gamepad, i was using the wheel and it is nearly impossible to drift the Nissan (the one you get gifted for the drift beginner events).

I have the same problem sometimes coming out of drifts, and sometimes at the start. It really doesn't make much sense how these cars become so unstable at such low speeds just coasting.

I find that keeping the momentum up after a drift lessens the chance of spinning out versus slowing down to try and straighten out.

Starting off, I usually start off in 3rd gear and give it half throttle and once I get up to speed, it seems to stabilize.

I have and i thought it was actually impossible when comparing it with the intro to drifting with that s13. I'm confused as **** as what to do.

It's like that with prostreet as well the intro has a RX-7 that can do everthing and has like a cracked bumper which is tied back together but you can't do that in the game.
 
I soo badly wanted the drifting to be good in this game. I have messed around with every combination of settings, and at the best setting it's still just making me angry!
I use a G25 on PS3, I've done a lots of drifting in plenty of other games/sims aswell as in real life. I just feel like a retard trying to drift in this game. :grumpy:

They do seem to run on the same principle as was the case in shift 1. S2U feels like there is some sort of steering assist on (even when I'm on elite). Drifting is terrible, worst I've ever experienced.

I don't have S2U yeght but all the nfs game fell like you have assist when you turn it off.
 
I found it is impossible with a wheel (at least on the PC). I could barely finish the training lessons using it. Plugged in a 360 controller and could drift with ease....
 
I am finding drifting extremly hard I used a DA 240 and the badbull rx8 you win and I am still stuggling to control it, the physics feel rather weird to be honest.
 
Well, I wanted to refuse drifting in Shift 2 since like all of you fellas, I'm unable to drift with my DFGT. But today something made me try it with the DS3. What may I say? On Elite setting without driving aids and the default setting for the controler it works like a breeze for me. Better as in Shift 1 and way better - even more entertaining - then I expected.

Doing all the events with the drift alliance Nissan wasn't a problem, now I'm at the 9th bunch of events. Bit more tricky now. Only thing I lack is finding some proper settings for drifting in other cars. Tried to build a RX-7 for drifting, getting close but without getting the precise control of the Nissan.
 
Drifting is not bad. I love it. All you hardcore wheel users can use the game pad. Nobody has to know. So it would put a huge dent to your ego but so what. Let it go. It does not make you less of a racing gamer. If you really want to drift then start practicing. If not, well no one is forcing you. It may not be like in real life but it is still very enjoyable and possible. People care too much of what is written on paper and forgot how to have a little fun and maybe learn something in the process.

I am just an average gamer. I am sure any of you have mad skills to dust me. This kind of reminds of the first time playing Skate. After you go through the learning curve you can bust tricks like nothing. Same for Shift drifting =)
 
I cannot drift with a wheel at all, however with a pad it's not that hard. It all seems to be very silly, the physics for drifting seem to be very odd. There is little progression in the slide and and you don't need to initiate it, just hold it.

I found the best way to start off is to just drive round the track and hold the slides as they come!
 
I only own a pad but I complete all the events up to the ebisu ones with a supra I bought and modded. its tricvky but do-able

^told you guys. yea I really wanted to be able to drift with my DFGT but o well i'm happy with the controller
