help me choose a system!

Ok, I have been given a mission by my father.

I recently set up a 7.1 home theater system using klipsch speakers and an okyo receiver, my father came over for a visit and was very impressed with it. So impressed that he now wants a full home theater system for his house plus a system to listen to music on the main level. Being the kind of person he is, he HAS to out do me. :lol:

So, with that being said, he wants me to do a little research and pick out the speakers and receivers he needs to do this. So I’m thinking a 7.1 system + receiver for the TV room and maybe 4-6 speakers for the main level (receiver included) SO, here is the great part: I have $30,000 to work with!

So any of you members who have experience in this subject, you recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

So, this is going to be a HT system?

Go with this...

Speakers by... B&W (800 Series)

Pre-amp (Video & Audio) by... Anthem (Statement D2)

Power Amp by... Simaudio (Moon A/V series Aurora 7)

That should push your $30,000 spending cost. Note: The Moon Aurora 7 only appears to have a bad sn ratio because it's rated for FULL POWER and this sucker is 200 watts continuous output. That might seem noisy, but you wont hear it at 200 WATTS!
 
Ah, wouldn't it be nice to have so much money that you have to get your children to figure out how to spend it.

Well, He has no clue about this kind of stuff. so he thought it would be a good idea to get someone who has at least some knowledge on the subject deal with it. he just wants it to sound good :lol:
 
For $30,000 I'd get custom built speakers. B&W is nice and all, but I've put their speakers through the Pepsi challenge against my speakers. While my rear/center channels are nothing special, I've never heard a pair of front channel speakers that could compete with my own custom built units.

Davis, Hi-Vi, and Tang Band would all be great drivers to use in a custom setup. I'm sure you could find a local custom speaker/home theatre specialist who would be able to build your father a setup perfectly suited for him, the space available, and what he wants out of the system.

Other than that, I haven't a clue as to what sort of equipment (other than speakers, of course) you'd want to use in a home theatre setup with a budget like that. I'm just a speaker guy ;)
 
I used to have a speaker system business with my brother. We used Scan-Speak and Seas drivers, mostly.

Hi Vi aren't bad, but they're nothing special. But, they area great value for what you get.

I doubt going with custom built speakers are what's best for powripper's father. It takes a LOT of time and care to select the proper drivers, then a LOT of trial and error matching the drivers to the correct crossover network. I must have went through 30 or 40 crossover designs before getting the correct one. They don't seem like the type to put themselves through that.

Besides, B&W are fine enough for 95% of the people. They're the only mass produced speaker system company I know that custom build each crossover system for each speaker and actually audition them to see if they're matched well with the drivers.
