Basically my little brother got a laptop for christmas and has somehow managed to mess it up already as he now has some form of malware which is called Personal internet security 2011 and I googled how to get rid off it 3 hours ago and have had no success so does anyone know how to get rid off it?

malwarebytes.org

That will get rid of just about anything.

Superantispyware.com works well too.

This is ifthe virus will let you browse the internet and download and install files.

If you are going to download it on one laptop and transfer it across on a USB stick. Make sure you THOROUGHLY scan it when you're done.

Yeah I have had experance with this malware and if you reboot your computer it will put your browser on a proxy that blocks every connection. Just change proxy settings back to normal in browser settings and download malware bytes. I used that to remove the virus. If it does not let you download it then press F8 when you boot up and chose Safe-mode with Networking.

After all of that I think you should install Ad-Block plus on his laptop just for extra measure.

Yeah I am going to do that as the infected laptop can sign into msn but cannot connect to the internet.

Update infected computer has connection and is running malwarebytes scan now.

If it comes back, and there's a good chance it will (Malwarebytes may have missed the installer files, which may wake up later,) download the CD image a Kaspersky Rescue Disc, burn it, boot it, run its updater and scanner. Scans and repairs your system without it being booted, exposes rootkits that can hide from scanners running on your booted system.

Another one, but not for the squeamish or the unwashed masses though, is ComboFix.

I've used combofix quite a few times. It's never caused any upset. I understand that it can damage the system but it's always worked perfectly for me.

I had one that went south, but probably no hope for that one, anyway. By "not for the squeamish" what I meant was understanding some of the prompts and preliminaries. Lots of folks won't know what to make of, or trust, the need to install the Microsoft Recovery Console, for example, if they haven't read the docs on the site.
It's not a pretty interface, it's basic, it shows up lots of stuff on its log page that mean nothing to most folks and scares off the rest.
But damn if it don't work!!
