Help me set up my Z/28 for Drift?

Hey all. I've been looking for a bit of a challenge in GT4, since I'm pretty good at grip racing, so naturally I decided to go sideways. I chose the Z/28 to highten that challenge.

Okay, so heres the deal. The 69' Camaro with a Small Block is a difficult car to master. *Big Block more so* I did spend a good deal of time racing a 69' Super Sport in stock form to get a feel for the machine, and my dads real life experience in his teens with Camaro's helped me out. In grip racing that car, one enters the corner from the center and brakes hard in, mashing the gas at the apex to get the tires spinning and have the car turn. In fact, I've witnessed this at a Vintage Racing meet where the featured class was Trans Am.

The car has two main handling issues. Front Wheel Understeer, and a very light rear end. As such it spins mightily. Even with the suspension tuning I've done it retains it's tendency to spin out every chance it gets.

So, I need some help fine tuning my setup. Here's the run down.

Stage 1 NA, Port Polish, Blueprint, ECU (Timing in this case xD) 346bhp at 5800rpm, 334 Ft-lb at 4200rpm. *Shakes fist at Polyphony for getting the Chevy 302 wrong*

N3 Tires, Stage 3 lightening, Stock trans,Triple Plate Clutch,Racing Flywheel, and Carbon Driveshaft

Settings:
Brake Balance: 8 Front 16 Rear *Just realized how bad that could be effecting the car*

Spring Rate: 6.2 front 5.8 rear

Ride Height: 106 Front and Rear

Dampers: Bound 5 F&R Rebound 7 F&R

Camber 2.5 Front 0 rear

Toe -1 front 0 rear

Sway bars 3 F&R

LSD

Anyone got any ideas?

OK, now this is a perfectly fine thread!

You've given all the info that we need to give you a hand. A video would help even more :)

Let's help him out here guys.

Hmmm I haven't done a video in GT4 yet. I can try, you can save them to USB Drives right?:dunce:

The only kind of drift I've managed in it is sort of a combination Feint/Power Over drift like one would do if they were actually racing a STOCK 69' Camaro.
The rest of the time I'm just spinning helplessly. xD

IF you're spinning a lot then you've got too much throttle.

Yeah, I kinda figured. I'm running the D pad and buttons, so I tend to mash. xD

Would I be better off to run with the Sticks on the DS2?

Edit:

Ho'kay I cant get a vid.

I think my main problem is that I'm very n00bish with my throttle and steering. I did just have some nice laps at Apricot Hill.

Well, I could never do the right thumb for throttle but you NEED to do the left for steering. Period.

With the throttle you need to feather it a lot. While in a drift there shouldn't be a lot of time when you're totally on or totally off the throttle. There needs to be lots of modulation. Remember, the throttle is ANALOG, IRL and in the game. So treat it like that:)

Okay I'll try that.

I just ran some more, gave a Grip lap a go and the car seems to like the setup when I'm easy on it after slightly tweaking ride hight, sway bars, and the Diff. I'm going to De-Tune the motor a bit and try and control the throttle better.

I really wish the motor behaved like it's supposed to. Chevy 302's have a 4" Bore and 3" Stroke so they tend to like to rev. In fact they have a redline stock at about 7200 RPM whereas in the game it's 6700 RPM that it starts bouncing off the limiter. /rant

That's all about your gear ratios. But I honestly wouldn't start messing with those till you understand how the car behaves.

Um...

Higher or lower gear ratios do not change the engines power band. It changes how quickly you get there and how long it stays there.

What I'm saying is that PD has the 302 making peak power at 5800rpm instead of 6800rpm. I assume they went by the manufacturer ratings, thing is, in the Sixties, the Big three did some SERIOUS sandbagging for insurance reasons and to push their Big Block cars. It's hard to get a decent number for these cars because they didn't use to dyno them during magazine tests but the Z/28 was only a few tenths slower than a 350 Horse 396 Big Block Camaro in the quarter, mostly thanks to not having low enough gearing.

And that concludes my thoughts on the inaccuracy of the engine model for this particular car.

I'm just having difficulty with driving it, I'm used to running in Auto with Traction Control on and big sticky tires to keep the car from running away from me.

So, In closing here is where I'm screwing up:

Weight Transfer

Corner Entry

Throttle Control

Brake Control

And probably in Brake Setup and LSD setup.

So you can change the gear ratios to better match the speeds you want to be in while drifting but still retain most of the power that would be lost by shifting. Trust me, it can be very helpful

Yeah, I know that. I was merely going a tad Off Topic and complaining about how the Motor behaves while I was on the subject of Z/28's:lol:

Dunno why I was though.:dunce:

With the Four Speed all it lacks is top end speed, it has pretty brutal acceleration through 1-2 and it's well behaved in 3-4

EDIT: Mainly I'm keeping the good ol' Muncie box because I'm a bit of a purist.

Changing the gear ratio to match the speed is very helpful.

Had to do that today to my C-West Razo Silvia, at 4000 to 5000 rpm it wouldnt gain any speed whatsoever. Now its in the powerband in gear 1 - 6.

Well, I've upgraded to stage three NA at 472 horse, and super hard compound slicks. It's more controllable now but still will slide if I toss it right, which is my problem because I still suck at steering with the thumbstick so I keep going back to the D-Pad. xD

I'll post my new settings again once I get a chance to drive on this last set.
