Help me with my newbie pc questions

Just got my computer build done and have a question already.

I have windows premium 64 bit with 12 gig of memory. When I check to see how much RAM I have it says 12 gig (3.99) useable. Is that the most windows will use? And if it is will my games be able to use more then just that 4 gigs?

I will have mroe questions to follow this so I figured one thread would better then making a bunch of them.
 
EDIT2: Oh wait. It is a 64 bit install....reading comprehension fail.

Are all your RAM Sticks the same?

- Also go into your BIOS and reset to to default. Then see if their is an option titled 'Memory Remap' or similar, and see if it's enabled.
- Also try going Run>msconfig>boot>advanced settings> and check that the 'maximum memory' option isn't ticked.

I too am having a similar problem.
I'm running an Asus Rampage Gene III mobo, and 12gb of G-Skill RAM (bought as a kit). Win 7 64 Ultimate.

Mine only sees 8gb out of 12, but CPU-Z sees 12gb. I've googled it, and it can be fixed, but it's a total pain in the butt.

Download and run CPU-Z and see how much RAM it sees. Let us know.

What mobo/CPU/RAM are you running?

Also, is it Windows 7?
 
I'd definately check the CPU-Z and see if it's actually detecting all the RAM correctly.

Then, it might be a pain in the ass. But you may have to see if any sticks are faulty by process of elimination. Take a stick out. Boot it up. Check. Rinse Repeat. Check each channel individually, etc.

Try a Bios update for your board, if it doesn't detect the full amount.

If that doesn't work contact EVGA.
 
Wait...I may have misunderstood something. I can't read today, apparently. :lol:

Might want to try running Memtest or the integrated one in W7 with each stick individually for at least 4-6 hours to see if they're any good or not. Also as already suggested have a look through the BIOS.

Now I need to go and erase that post up above because it's embarrassing me. :p

It's only detecting 4. I called EVGA, and they had me try a few things and then blamed it on my ram. Then corsair blamed it on windows. Then windows couldn't understand me well enough to hear my windows authentication number so they couldn't help me.
PC support is horrible, no one wants to help they just pass the problem on to the next company. I have 2 macs and apple always takes care of me on the phone. They will spend hours trying to help you if thats what it takes. I'm starting to remember why I gave up on windows based computers in the first place.

I have read though that it seems some people have had trouble with my motherboard, and corsair RAM. I think I'm just going to order a different brand and then send the corsair back.
 
That won't do him any good, OCZ is out of the memory market.

Did you try flashing the BIOS? What info does CPU-Z specify? Try going to the EVGA forum and get support there.

CPU-z sayd 12 gig, and the EVGA and Corsair forums have ideas on how to fix it and for some people it has worked, but not for me.
I was getting ready to update my bios just now, and somehow my mini hdmi to hdmi adapter broke. It looks like I'm down for the count until I can get another one.

The more I read about the X58 motherboard, the more I see that people have lots of RAM detection problems with it. I'm going to try and flash the bios when I get another adapter.

Neither my TV or receiver has has DVI, plus I carry my sound through my HDMI out of the video card. I went to radio shack and spent a small fortune on a cord and now I'm back in business. One thing I haven't done is seen if my heat sink is to tight. That's one of the things I've heard can cause this problem. My buddy should be over shortly to check it for me. Hopefully that will fix it, and I can give up on the trouble shooting, and start downloading some racing sims, and maybe even tryout a little bit of witcher 2.
 
I think the problem was my mother board. 2 pins were bent. I'm returning and want to try a different board other then the EVGA x58 sli3. I read some other people having the same problem with unregistered memory with it.

What motherboard should I get to run my i7 950, gtx 570, ocz SSD and my 12 gigs of corsair RAM? I woudl spend up to 300$ on one.
 
Dang, didn't know OCZ went out of the ram market.

TEAM are also good i am running it at the moment, G.Skill are good as well.

I'm using an MSi x58 Pro-E that I've never had any problems with. I'm surprised the EVGA board didn't work out as I've only heard good things about them. EVGA is usually really good with support and replacements so you may want to look into that first. Otherwise look into a board from ASUS maybe.

What kind, and how much RAM are you using with it?

I ordered a new board that hopefully will find all 12 gigs of RAM. The ASUS rampage III formula. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131666

Hopefully yhis works out and I'm sim racing by tomorrow night. I'm on vacation until the 11th so this is my best chance to get everything figured out.

I tried 6 8 and 12 gigs, and it said only 3.99 usuable everytime. Windows showed 12, and cpu-z said 12 but the bios was only seeing 4.
 
I have another question so I'm returning to this thread.

I have had a few heat issues with my setup. My cpu was running really hot so I went and bought a liquid cooling unit for it, and that took care of that.

Now I'm starting to think my case may have the fans in wrong. Here is the case. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108376&Tpk=in win dragon rider

It came with a 220mm side fan, and 3 120mm fans on the spread around. None of them seem to be blowing out. They are all just sucking in air, and my gpu is running in the mid to high 60s while I'm playing games. Should one of the fans be blowing out, and if so which one should I turn around?
There is one large side fan, 1 top fan, 1 rear fan, 1 side fan for back of cpu, and my other top fan that blows through my cpu radiator.
 
The front and large side fan should be blowing in. The rear,side, and rear-top fan should be blowing out. I would assume the radiator fan should also be blowing out if it doesn't depend on cooler air blowing in.

Last night I turned all the fans on high, and I think one of the top ones might be blowing out. If it is, it's a really weak fan. I might go and see about either switching to some other types of fans, or just going liquid cooling all the way through instead of just on the cpu.
 
After eading some more about gpu temps, it looks like they get alot hotter then the cpu. My cpu never gets into the 50's, but the gpu is in the mid to high 60's all the time when playing games. Looking at some benchmark tests some sites have done, it looks like in the 60's is alot better then I thought.

I'll just swap around my rear fan and see if that helps out any. The only reason I'm really worried much about it, is that I'm thinking about going ahead and adding another gtx 570. I imagine that will make it a little more difficult to cool 2 cards because they will be so close together.

On a side note, I did mess with MSI afterburner some last night and got my clock speed up to 815 from 732 and my memory speed to 1950 without messing with voltage. That added about 9 fps on the unigine benchmark. I just wish it was that easy to OC the CPU. That's something I'm really scared to try and do. does anyone know of any programs for CPU overclocking that are just sliders like MSI afterburner has.
