I'm an idiot and I can't get custom pics for my avatar. It just says "Invalid URL". Please help!

Lower the color resolution a bit. It saves space, but if you take it too far, almost everything looks awful.

Also, make sure that you're using the best type of file format to save the picture in. For most images, JPEG with reasonable compression (less than 90% or so) should allow you to get well below the file size limit.
