Ok, heres the problem, when i first got this comp, and for a while afterwards the sound was working fine. Then i got a nasty virus and had to re install Windows XP. Since then nothing i plug into my computer will play any sound. Any ideas whats up? Ive searched google, and various websites for hours and hours.
Ive got an onboard (built-in, whatever) soundcard by the way (according to my research on google).

Press Windows Key + the Pause/Break key.

Click the Hardware tab. Click on Device Manager. Look down your list of devices for any red crosses or question marks. Report your findings...

I'm guessing when you reinstalled windows, the driver for your soundcard either got installed incorrectly, or didn't get installed at all. As amp88 said, take a look on device manager, and see if there is anything that looks abnormal.

Yes, as your sound is onboard, you will need to reinstall the drivers for your motherboard. I had this problem before too. You should be able to get this from ASUS' website.

Ok Findings...Nothing. i looked down the list, no crosses or anything in the 'sound video and gamecontrollers' section, i checked all the theres still nothing.

I went to www.driverguide.com so many drivers if only i knew which one

EDIT: Ooooh, just noticed what you said about ASUS's website, ill check it out and get back to you.

Dowloading driver, hope it works....

EDIT: No it didnt work, ive just noticed something else, theres no sound icon on the barr in the bottom right of my screen. It was there before. i have no idea what this means though.

Oh.
Hmm, go into control panel, and then sound and audio devices. First, make sure "Place the volume icon in the taskbar" is ticked. And have a look at what the volume is. Is it right down low? Then click on the audio tab, and take a looksie at what is set as your default output. If you've installed something like a usb audio device, it often changes it. I only just realised that it had set my default recording device to my webcam. No wonder my recordings were quiet :irked:

Make sure the option I have highlighted here is set to the correct sound device:

ive set it to what i assume to be the rigt thing, im just plugging headphones into the back like i always have done. Theres two options to select here,

I selected avance AC97 Audio, which i assume to be the correct thing.

Earlier i went through windows troubleshooter (think thats what its called), i got this far without a solution. I rolled back as far as i could it still didnt work.

IT told me to look at my BIOS, how do i access this? its when i turn on the comp....but how do i stop everything loading like normal and get on this screen?

When you boot your PC up, you should see somewhere on the screen something like "Press DEL to enter BIOS". Just press the key it specifies to get into the BIOS. However, reinstalling Windows really shouldn't have changed any BIOS settings...

ok, ill try it now, and ill carry on with the troubleshooter aswell.

EDIT: no it didnt work, i enabled something that i thought might of worked in the BIOS, but it didnt, so im stuck again, and finished the troubleshooter with no success.....Any chance of another link Icemanshooter?

Just did, and still it keeps saying connection was refused....ect, this is annoying. Il try it every now and again, try to surprise it lol

EDIT: Would it be affected by the fact im using Mozilla? Ill try IE a second..

I'm using mozilla, and it's downloading fine. I'll try and upload it somewhere for you if it still doesn't work.

Have you still got the cd that came with your motherboard?

The driver will be on that.

Ooooh Yea!! Im one happy person!! I restarted the comp, and that annoying windowsa sound played through the speakers, at which point i leaped into the air, and nearly fell down the stairs next to my comp (it would have been worth it).
Thanks for the link Icemanshooter!! and for all the help guys 👍 if i wasnt talking to you through his thing called the internet i would kiss you, lol
