Ive never had a spyware problem that I couldnt get rid of, but this time its different...
I am using three different scanners, AdAware, MS AntiSpyware and Spybot - S&D.
I tried to run MSCINFIG and disable "NEWDOT~2" but it enables itself. I also tried to close programs through the task manager that looked fishy. It didnt allow me to close them.
So, I guess my question is, what kind of software should I use to get rid of the problem?

Problem(s):
NewDotNet
CoolWWWSearch
SmitFruad

Effects:
Opens a browser every 5 (of fewer) minutes to a spam website.

Help! Thank-you!

I understand that at this time the least you'd want to do is donwload more stuff, but have a check at Major Geeks... lots of anti-spyware tools and walkthroughs. It has helped me in the past.

You could also try typing the name of the "fishy" processes into Google and some of the results will be what the process is about and how to eliminate it. Some of the links will also take you to some forums where people have similar problems. You could check those out as well. Again, I'm telling you what I've done in the past.

I am having the same problem to but i ran ms antispyware and it found two of them, zlob and spyfalcon, and deleted it, problem is it its these two alerts in my task bar that says critical computer and when you click on them it directs you to this site called malware.com and you can buy thier antispyware and virus protector to get rid of the stuff.

so I ran avg and avg found a trojan downloader and some java viruses but it can't delete them it says they are embeded i was like what the crap.

the things in my toolbar is a yellow triange with a "!" in the middle and the other one is a handicap sign thats green and it flashes back and forth to a red circle with a line through it and that one says you computer is infected click on the icon and buy the software to get it off.

so does anybody know what is going on, i ran avg, and ms anitspyware and nothing has happend, i think i should get everything wiped and get windows reinstalled on my computer.

also the thing says that my computer has a virus that attaches its self to all my .exe files.

last problem i keep getting pop ups from computer companys saying my computer is infected by my software now to fix your computer.

sombody please help me.

this makes me want to get a mac right now.

Diego440 has some good suggestions, so I would also suggest you give what he says a shot.

The only thing I can really contribute to is prevention for next time. I suggest using a different browser if you're using IE6. Download IE7 Beta, Firefox, or Opera. Also, stay away from shady sites and certain software (just Google the list of software to stay away from).

That's a great idea.:D Or if you don't want to go out and buy new hardware, maybe a GNU/Linux distribution on your current machine is more logical. But safe computing can be achieved on Windows.👍

This is what is happening to me. I tried to run the scanners in safe mode and that didnt work either. :ill:

Was this website the malware directed you to called spyaxe or spysheriff?

Theres a bit about clicking on bogus anti-spyware ads in MarkRussinovich'sBlog( 3rdpost;The Antispyware Conspiracy ).

That's why you should use a browser like firefox where you can block ads & more importantly the background scripts these webpage 'partners' run through your browser. This way you can only be caught out by malevolent traps such as this if you open the door for their scripts by allowing them explicitly or by explicitly following some dumb link...

Well I had this problem two weeks ago, and I was using Firfox, spybot, MS antispy and NAVcorp. I couldnt get rid of it, the one thats doing all the damage is smitfraud, I had to format in the end, and to be honest im glad i did, but Eveything I did to get rid of it didnt work, I sugest formating your PC.

BTW It was my brother who allowed the thing to get on the PC, hes not very clever.

so how do i format my pc, do i still keep all my documents and songs, and pictures and stuff, plus it is a work computer for my mom and she goes through novel client and vpn firewall if i formate it or get everything wiped of can i still keep my stuff.

also i forgot i downloaded spyware doctor from pc tools and it is the trial version does anybody think this is good cuase i might buy it found 714 infections on my pc but it could'nt delete them cause its not the fullo version.

Backup everything to an external hard drive or CD/DVD. Once you format, you lose everything. Also, make sure you have your Windows install CD.

Sadly, formatting every once in a while is common practice when using Windows. But it does get rid of everything. Even people at Microsoft suggest it: Nuke your PC

Again, make sure you have a backup of everything. (or everything that's important I guess) Since this is a work computer, you may want to discuss this with your mom. She might not be too happy if something goes wrong.

And as for anti-spyware, you don't have to spend money on them. Check out DQuaN's post. Windows Defender is currently in beta, but its pretty good. Like I said before, using a secure browser such as Firefox, IE7 Beta, or Opera, and using Windows Defender will decrease the likelihood of this happening again.

Good luck man

well its an old computer and it runs windows 2000 nt and it won't download windows defender, plus we don't have the back up disc and other programs cause her job gave it to us. we really just need a new computer.

its a p2 with 128mb of memory and 5gig hard drive.

so its in due time for another one.

On the plus side, you have Win2000.

OK, it was kind of confusing as to what exactly your problem was. When you say "toolbar" do you mean "taskbar?" Maybe screenshots will help? If you could lay out the problem in detail I'll see what I can do.👍

its in the task manager and i can't right click and get them out.

if you go to DeLoreanBrown's post and click on the link and go to the third post thats what my computer is doing, except i have actually spyware on my computer,

my lesson is learned never let you porn addicted friend use your computer
and i think it is spysherrif and crap it keeps saying please download antimalware and crap

Hmm... yeah stay away from shady sites, its a haven for malware.

And as for various anti-spyware, perhaps you should check out some reputable computer sites to make sure that the program is legitimate. I think Lavasoft's Ad-aware is legit. My university provides the pro version for free and the personal (free) version is just as functional so maybe you can try that out. Too bad you can't use Windows Defender. BTW, are you still using Internet Explorer?

no i downloaded firefox like 3 weeks ago, but my friend opened up ie, cause when i get on the computer on firefox everything is fine. its just when i open up ie thats when all hell breaks loose.

where can i download ad-ware. and i know spyware doctor is legit to cause best buy and circuit city carries it. so if none of this helps i might go buy that.

xsquizet-drifte, if can't re-install windows, kill all the users that have had contact w/ the internet, use A fresh username account loose those suckers! Delete evrything but precious files from the Documents & Settings area. Then run anti-virus & anti-spyware on the machine. This might tame whatever is throwing you the loop until you can get hold of a disc:scared:

This is ridiculous. I just bought a 160GB HD so I can back up my files and format. :(
Anyways, anyone know what file(s) contain my firefox settings (passwords, bookmarks, settings, etc)?
Thanks!

well i downloaded ad-ware and it worked some but i still got that crap in my task bar, i need to update to service pack for on my comp then i think i can run windows defender.

spyfalcon is a ***** and this company called malware wipe sucks to releasing stuff on your computer to get you to buy their products. thats so gay.

if i switch to linux am i still at risk for viruses and spyware.

I've been killed by spyware twice in my 1-year relationship with my computer. I had to restore/format the computer every 3 months because it will be very unstable by then. Its annoying. Somehow, I am managing to keep my computer alive for 5 months in a row right now, but who knows. Its always a wise idea to buy a bunch of DVD-/+ RWs to burn the data, or if you have a huge documents folder, then an external HDD would be a good idea.

I use Windows Defender Beta. Had no troubles yet so I can't exactly tell you how effective it is, but Norton Antivirus usually picks everything up if you keep it up-to-date.

Whatd you guys do to get spyware? Im 12 years old and Im on the internet 24/7, besides once having to do a Windows re-install from spyware overload death, I havent had any problems at all.

If you're running XP, go to Start>Run>Type in "Application Data">Mozilla>Profiles

Then, there should be a folder called (somerandomletters).default. Copy the folder, and when you install Firefox, copy the contents of the folder from your backup drive to the same folder where you got the old profile files.

Nope. There's vulnerabilities of course because no operating system is truly secure. But it will be very unlikely (close to impossible) that you will run into these problems.

However, you did mention that this computer was a work computer, so I'm sure the computer needs certain software. You're best bet is probably Windows.

Another thing, while Windows 2000 may run just fine on the hardware you have, most modern linux distributions will crawl with your computer's current specifications. (There are exceptions... there are some lightweight distros but I haven't tried them out.)

ok update yall,

I am almost spyware free, I have one left on my computer, its called spyaxe and its a malicous downloader and it won't come off, but other than that the other 707 spyware off my computer, i am happy that i got most off just need to get the rest.

I bought spyware doctor, and it worked and its pretty good, it updates every 3 hours. it was a good 30 dollar investment.
