help with laptop speaker

i need some help fixing my laptop's built-in speakers. Just recently, one of the speakers stopped working, and now it does work on and off, but when it does, i get a horrible crackling sound from any audio that comes through it. i can hear the music, but the crackling on top of it just drowns both speakers out

can anyone help? thanks
 
Sounds to me to be a busted speaker. The only fix is to open it up and replace it.
 
I think my dad still has a set of external speakers at his house. if i were to use them instead of my built-in ones, would that work?
 
It depends on whether it's your sound card that is damaged or your speakers. If it's only your speakers, then the external speakers should work fine.
