This is an indicator of the player's "speed." There are six different ratings in total: E, D, C, B, A, and S. "E" is the lowest rating, and "S" is the highest. Achieving good results in Sport Mode races will increase your Driver Rating. Your rating will decrease if you fail to achieve a certain level of results. Please note, however, that your Sportsmanship Rating needs to meet the required standard for your Driver Rating to increase. All players start with a Driver's Rating of "E."

What you're saying about how the rating system works is, of course true, but if the SR affects the DR, then DR isn't just a measurement of speed. As everyone has experienced by now, being run into by someone else can lower your SR. That doesn't mean you've become slower.

The rating system doesn't really give an accurate measurement of drivers. As @Sven Jurgens has previously pointed out before, it would make more sense for the game to allow a driver to be rated A/D, then to reset DR because of SR.
