The upcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of HD Gaming for people thinking in purely visual terms. Aside from the GT franchise's reputation as being one of the most realistic and unforgiving race simulations around, the series has also been widely regarded as a high watermark for visuals. The upcoming release of the latest version of the game - a preview of sorts since it sports only 6 tracks and a smaller number of cars - has already been making waves among fans of the series for its stunning images in full 1080p resolution. Many are already confident that this newest game will once again set the standard for visuals in racing, only to be toppled by the proper version of Gran Turismo 5, whenever it finally debuts.

That's great, but unfortunately nowadays there can be done upscaling with HD resolutions which is bad. Is there any person here professional/observant enough, please tell does GT5 use upscaling while 1080p, or it uses for real 1080p while racing(1920x1080)? A mate I know, he is a Xbox and PC adorer he sais there is a possibility 1080p is fake in GT5. Can anyone provide me with real material against this? A High res video, your opinions, anything..

This is not a rumor, merely a doubt.

Prologue is not "native" 1080p (1920 x 1080), it's 1280 x 1080 then upscaled (or interpoled, not sure) to 1920 x 1080.

1280x1080 is not true widescreen isn't it? Can anyone else explain better how it works?
And if it's 1280x1080 natively and then upscaled what is the sense in buying a Full HD TV for the game and PS3 when you can have a cheaper one and be perfectly set, like 1080i for example.

The game is rendered at 1280 x 1080, then the PS3 upscale (or interpole, like PS1/2 games) it to 1920 x 1080, so it is displayed in Full HD

So, yes, it is still worth getting a Full HD TV for GT5.

Do you understand or do you want me to explain again?

Why doesn't it use 1920x1080 in the first place, because the console isn't capable of it right now, or this upscaling thing will be the basic treatment for the future consoles also? 1920x1080 is much better than 1280x1080 and it's a true widescreen, like in a PC game.

Quite simply, the PS3 isn't capable of full 1080p at 60fps for GT5*... and the 60fps mark is much more important than the full 1080p for a racing sim. However, you won't even realize it when you're playing the game. It looks just as good as PC sims that I have running through the same monitor (PS3 via DVI and PC via VGA) which run at 1900x1200.

* - Currently, it's not. There's nothing that says PD won't hit that mark for the full GT5 if they can optimize the engine without compromising the visuals and/or physics.

Unimental, that's mighty interesting, so there's a new idea that just came up. For instance I have a 1280x1024 19" PC monitor with DVI+D-Sub ability, can I use it for PS3 via DVI and have a good non widescreen picture? I can't for the life of me afford a HDTV plus PS3 right now and a PC monitor is better than a SDTV.

It won't actually output at 1280x1080, if that's what you're wondering.

It renders internally at 1280x1080 because 1920x1080 would currently bring down the framerate. This 1280x1080 is 'squished' so that it looks correct when stretched out to 1920 pixels wide, similar to the way anamorphic DVDs work.

The reason it's done this way is because high vertical resolution (1080) is more important than high horizontal resolution in a racing game; it offers greater depth of detail (i.e. distance detail). They could just output at 720p at 60fps, but you'd lose more depth detail.

I havent tried it on a normal CRT or other monitor but as I am running on a big screen full hdtv connected via HDMI, I must say that the resolutions are stunning and very smooth. only thing bugging me now is my rookie driving skills :yuck:

It's not fullHD, but still It's the best graphics and resolution-wise what can be seen today. 1280x1080 is very good resolution, much better than 1280x720.

Wasnt the XBOX having loads of problems playing games @ 720p
I remember reading an article about halo 3 which wasnt 720 but 640p

(here we go: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/halo-3-not-hd-runs-at-640p-pixel-counters-claim/)

Still by looking at all the screenshots GT5 looks magnificent!

That's not to say have no clue about games, but about the tech part which actually isn't connected to the gaming itself. I play games for years now, but I got confused with the HD thing when it hit the consoles. Ignorance is never a problem while it can be transformed into some knowledge with the aid of the good guys around, so thank you for your explanations. :)

It's 'Interlaced' mate, not 'Interpol'.

Interpol are the people that go after criminals abroad. :dunce:
