Hey, gang, I read through these threads and didn't really see the information I was looking for, so I'll make a thread of my own, just like any n00b.

I'm probably going to get my wife a PSP/Death Jr. bundle for the holidays. The pricing seems pretty stable around $289 among the major retailers. I often shop through Pricewatch/Pricegrabber, but nobody particularly trustworthy is going much below the $250 mark for the console alone. Anybody know some good deals?

She wants Death Jr., I know, but are there any other recommended non-racing games? I'm gathering Lumines is good in a Tetris-like way.

Is the game system complete with AC adapter, and can you play with it plugged in?

Any 'must have' gaming accessories? We probably will not use it much for movies, at least not for a while. It seems to use the same memory sticks that our Sony digicam does, so we'll have a spare 256mb stick available right away, and we can buy more later if necessary.

Anything else I should know? TIA.

Don't know about prices in the US - Go ask someone else ;)

One thing you WILL have to buy, however, is the Logitech Gamegear Pocket which will protect the delicate sexy surface of the PSP..

The headphones that comes with the Value Pakc are ghey... They are "Ear Friendly" which basically means they won't go above 90dB... I'm guessing it's because Sony won't get sued by parents whose kids have tinnitus.. Sucks when trying to watch "The Punisher" on an airplane - The Remote is nice, just get another set of headphones...

Yes, you can play games and watch movies when the PSP is charging...

Buyer Beware - getting your better half Lumines equals daily routine out the window....

[Edit:] The Gamegear Pocket also doubles as a nice little bedside table stand for your PSP - Excellent for watching movies in a Hotelroom !...

I think the headphones won't be much of an issue for Duke, I remember him saying he has some Sony EX71's.

Get Lumines- at your risk ;)

A case is a must... as Flerbizky already covered, but are you sure your camera uses Memory Stick Pro Duo cards?

But do you really want to drag those along ?.. Eg. stuffed in a handbasket when going on, say, an airplane ? ;)

I bougth a somewhat cheap set from Sony in ear line... Works wonders..

Strange thing is - Usually, headphones that comes with stuff like this, sucks.. The Sonys do actually work very well.. Well, apart form the "Ear Phriendly" part...

Those are EX71's, shoddy build quality though...

i hate the ones that come with the psp because you can't turn it up very loud!:ouch: So when i am in the car i cant here above the radio! They are so ANNOYING!! :grumpy:

Yeah, headphones aren't the issue. Nice to know a case is important, though. And Lumines sounds like a must. Thanks for the answers, guys, keep it coming!

Ohhh... I just assumed, since you put it like you did, that EX71s meant Sonys Grado equivalent... I'm such an asshat :dunce:

You also need to buy a decent cleaning cloth for the screen, at the one that comes with the PSP scratches the screen if you start rubbing a little hard. I bought my better quality one in an opticions (glasses store), and it seems to be better.

I'd say UMD cases are a must too, as if you want to take a few games with you somewhere, you can't damage or scratch the UMD's.

I did buy a Silicone jacket for the PSP as well. I think the case Flerbizky meantioned is more important (I have one myself), but if you are more serious about preventing scratches on the console (doesn't protect the screen), I'd say I recommend it. The only problem with it is that you can't take UMD's out while it's on, so I leave it off most of the time!

And yes, Lumines is a MUST! I can play it for hours in one go. :P

a mini USB cable is pretty handy, but you more than likely have one already (i know i have ALOT of them).

Also one thing which i found useful is the larger analogue stick which came with the an accessory pack i got as part of my bundle, the standard one IMO is too dfficult to use whilst this offers a marked improvement in comfort.

Also the built in speakers are pathetic (not very loud, really tinny) i'd reccomend getting an earphone splitter or a set of external speakers if you ever plan on wathcing a movie with another person.

Yes lumines can be very addictive, beware!

The Logitech is huge though, it's like two PSP, well ok not that bad but it's a lot heavier too. That iSkin ( such a gay name  ) looks flimsy.

I'd say something like this (sorry eGay was the fastest search for what I was looking for) seems minimal but does the job well.

I'd also consider batteries from here if you're not going to be around a charger a lot and use it constantly.

There is also cases that come with a built in charger but I don't know how great they are.

I heard you can connect a USB jump drive to the PSP and I'm not quite sure still if you can do the same with say a usb ext. hd but if so you might be able to avoid the stupid mem sticks.

BTW, I don't actually own a PSP.

You're the first person I know who disliked the iSkin. It's designed to protect your PSP from everyday use, not from a thermal nuclear attack.

I went back and looked but is the cover that goes over the screen really hard or re-enforced to not flex? If not I wouldn't want it because once you damage that screen your screwed. I don't know what the warrenty for those cover but I'm sure you probably have to pay for it and it's not something that's worth it if it's well protected. Yeah I know **** happens too. Anyway, if it's a thin light weight metal then I don't have to worry because it will protect the screen and the rest of the player fully. I noticed they want $50 which is also crazy ( maybe because of the "i" part of the name  ).

iSkins are good quality though, not the cheap stuff you find on eBay.

Just because it's sold on eGay doesn't mean you can't find it anywhere else nor does it mean it's going to be bad quality. You may get a kick ass price for something that should cost more though.

Hot Shots Golf - solid game, very addictive - it's no Lumines, but it's great.

If she's into retro gaming, grab a used psp and install some snes/nes emulators on it :D

I'm talking about silicone skins. In my experience iSkins are pretty good. eBay ones are cheap: both in price and quality. That aluminium case looks good though.

Please stop speaking like a 10-year old; eGay .

 10 yr old that's funny. Anyway, I don't see what good those silicone ones are going to do other than keep it together while it cracks all over on inpact. :ill:

Depends how durable a PSP is. The point of a silicone skin is to protect from everyday NORMAL wear and, tear not bomb blasts, while keeping the unit relatively small.

Yeah, the compactness of it is great but I could just see myself cracking that screen right off the bat first time in the pocket. Also, I've heard depending on what kind of material it will "stick" to the pocket making it a ***** to put in and take out of the pocket.

Well, she specifically asked for that game. I'm also getting her Lumines and Medi Evil as well, probably.

Ok... so it's Christmas and I need to make a list of things I want. I still can't justify getting one but I was thinking of asking for one just for the hell of it ( ok, that sounds bratty :grumpy: ). Anyway, I seriously doubt it would be used for gaming other than when GT4p comes out but, I was wondering about a couple of things...

- I know you can go online but can you d/l videos for example and watch them? I've been hearing a lot of buzz for video since the iPoo Video came out.

- If I'm just using it for playing Mp3s all day how long would the batt last?

Thanks for your help

You can convert any video into a psp compatible format using any number of freeware utilities.

I never tried it as an mp3 player, but I'm fairly certain it'll last you at least a few hours. I've managed about 3 hours of continuous gameplay with some games and I'm fairly sure that with the screen turned off and you using the psp's remote to control your music, it'll last around 4 hours, maybe a bit more.

It's kind of a long shot because of connectivity around here but the reason I wanted to be able to d/l, watch and then play is so that I don't have to have it in memory taking up space. Or is this unrealistic?

 Well I'm assuming batt. life in general sucks then? :ill:

I don't see why it's impossible, but I don't think anyone has implemented streaming content for the PSP yet. You'll have to download and drop it to a memorystick

 Well I'm assuming batt. life in general sucks then? :ill:
According to IGN, with the screen off and headphones at max volume, you'll get a bit over 10 hours of music time - so that's on par with most flash based mp3 players

Average gaming time should be around 3-5 hours - depending on the game, how much loading it requires, and how much it taxes the PSP's hardware.

Movies should be around the same as game time, maybe more since you won't be forcing the UMD to spin up

Hmm.. ok I guess that makes more sense for the batt stuff. Yeah, I did mean d/l and play not stream anyways, but stream would be *****in.
