My copy of the demo arrived in the mail on Monday. It' not bad, but I hope the controls aren't the final version.
First off, the game looks amazing. The graphics are improved over GT3, but there's not that big of a difference. However, the background of the Fuji course looked very poor, the car and course looked amazing. The Grand Canyon course looked downright jaw dropping. Everything about it was top nouch.
The crowds were animated, which looked a litlle on the silly side to me. But, it's a nice addition to the game. The replay of the game play was also excellent. You can choose differint car points of view. Push the X button, and then press R1 and L1 to change camera angles, which one includes a shot looking down at the driver so you can watch his real live movements. You could hit the circle button to turn off the music. You could hit the triangle button to zoom in on the car during certain shots. Hit the square button to display the vehicle hud, which on the Triathalon car looked complex and awesome. It had acceleration levels for each wheel, as well has brakes. It had traction control for each wheel, and a hight level for each wheel too. Three small triangles appeared above the hud of each wheel, and when the vehicle would run over grass or dirt, the hight of the vihcle would rise, which was represented by the triangles. Higher the car went up, the more triangles got light up. There was also a vehicle height display once your car started to rise. Each wheel also had a traction meter. A circle would turn green if you had proper contact with the road, yellow if you started to lose traction, and then red which started the wheels screeching. Also, the circle would change shape, as indication of suspension action. COOL! Ride over sand, grass, or the rumble strip, which didn't make any noise like in GT3, and the circle would pulsate smaller, or larger.
Now, for the bad part. The control of the vehicles. It's very gimmickie, twitchy and hard to handle at times. But, this was the arcade setting. The only race setting was with the Triathalon car on the Grand Canyon course, which was a blast to race on! It had a tarmac section, then a dirt section. WHen you vehicle hit the dirt, your car would shoot up to a height of 250mm, from it's starting height of 70mm. Super cool! The control was hard to get use, but possible. Turning off VSC or traction control was the key. The background of the GC was just so incrediable. PD could not do it any better.
As fun as I had with the demo, it's also very boring. There's nothing to race against. It's just you farting around for two minutes, and two minutes ONLY! Stupid. Sometimes, it's almost impossible to go around the course just once. There are no tests, no top scores or even time trials. Boring. But hey, it was worth the purchase price.
So, since it's so boring, let us owners of Toyota Demo compare times. For the Prius on the Fuji course, I got a time of 1:55:310. The demo runs it in 1:57:650, but I had to use one of my stopwatches since there are no time counters for the demo. For the GC, my best time is 1:39:217, and the demo was 1:41:245. I know one time I thought I reached the a time of 1:37:XXX but I didn't see the time long enough to confirm my time. The time disaperars very quickly, and there are no records course times.
Well, there you have it, folks. Feel free to ask questions.
