Yesterday I went to dinner with the woman I married and some of our mutual friends, and I parked next to a Lotus Esprit. So everyone was looking at the Lotus Esprit. But I couldn't stop focusing on the car next to it, which was a Honda CRX Roadster. It looked like a normal CRX but with a fabric top and "CRX ROADSTER" written on either door.

So -were these things stock like this? It looked well-done, so if it wasn't stock, the owner probably poured more money into it than what it was worth. I've never seen one before.

I also saw a Mercury Lynx today. What the **** is that ****? And four Saturn Vue V6s, and two Audi RS6s. I drive waaay too much. 👎

Weird, I myself have not heard of any such option available for a CRX, then again it could have been a ricer who just did a good job of making it a convertible, If thats the case, just imagine the torsional rigidity of it after having its top ripped off.

Yeh, probably a mod. There's one on the first page of "Questionable modifications" thread in Vids 'n Photos. It's hilariously ugly. I can't imagine it being any good, one of the key components of the CRX's success was its rigidity, and sawing off the top half would do wonders!

The vehicle was entirely stock except for the soft top - in fact, the writing on the doors even exactly resembled the font used for "CRX" on the back of the car.

It didn't look particularly like that blue one, though - the soft top didn't go all the way to the rear of the car - there was about eight inches of room for where the top could've hid if it was sunny.

A company called Straman in the early 90s actually converted a bunch of 'rexes into convertibles, with Honda's approval. So yes, they exist, and they're semi-factory.

What did they cost? Straman usually does Ferraris and Cadillac Eldorados and stuff - I'd imagine it isn't cheap.

Not too big a fan of the CRX roadster. Howefer, I do think the CRX Del Sol would make a nice 'vert. Especially if you gave the car the drivetrain it was clearly designed for and made it MR.

Hey I guess if you were going to buy a crap econo box, might as well buy it in a convert from. Just like the del Sol is the poor mans convertable.

:odd: I was unaware that convertables were supposed to be expensive. Also, the CRXs were hardly 'crap'.

The del sols seem like they were good little cars, although they looked a bit odd. I'm not sure why they went in such a different direction from the 2nd gen CRX styling.

But isn't the Mercury Tracer the Mercury Ford Escort...? :D

I know what the Lynx is, I'm kidding - though I can't recall having seen one this century. Very rare stuff.

This is the poor man's convertible:

I've been seeing Cavalier and Sunfire convertibles around recently - talk about rare, they're probably rarer than the Mercury Lynx and the Audi RS6 put together.

If you put the two together, wouldn't that make them less rare than either of the two seperatley? :)

Yeah, probably. I was going to say 'divided by two,' but that wouldn't have made any sense either. Happy belated birthday, by the way.

You forgot this one...

I didn't forget, I just choose not to talk about it unless I have to.
