Prelude will get a simulated gearbox similar to the Ioniq 5 N.
So is it quick-shifting or is it simulated?

Edit: That was a completely pointless article to state that the Prelude will use the Civic Hybrid's drivetrain which uses a clutched electric motor in lieu of a belted CVT. It is indeed simulated, and not quick-shifting because it doesn't shift, and it's not a CVT because there is no CVT, and it's not an automatic gearbox because there is no gearbox. Evo used so many terms that don't even exist in that car and managed to write an entire article about nothing lol.

Videos of a prototype being tested by Japanese media have been released with a Civic-like interior.

[Side note: It's kinda funny that this came out, two weeks after the red-colored concept was shown in KLIMS 2024.]

(For a moment, I thought this would be a purely static concept.)

So it's a Civic Coupe Hybrid basically. They got rid of the Civic Coupe in order to bring back the Prelude name.

Regardless, I feel like the actual BB5 Prelude was one of the last good-looking, sporty-looking front-drive coupes from Japanese companies, especially from the size category above the Civic and Corolla et al. The rest all looked girly, from the Accord Coupe, CL, Solara, etc. The 10th generation Civic Coupe, the previous one, had a very strange spaceship design and this new Prelude isn't far off. They look good in their own right but they still look feminine and not what I would call athletic or sporty.

The fact they've apparently chosen this one to be a hybrid only seals the deal that I won't be buying one. I highly doubt it'll be successful, despite being technically the fastest drivetrain on offer.

9th Gen Accord Coupe was a handsome car, IMO.

They all were, everything from the CL up through were decent to good. But sports cars aren't supposed to be handsome.

Yeah, I dnt know about that.

Might look like an Altima coupe, but that ain't bad.

The Prelude has the same cab forward design as the two cars above. Doesn't look girly to me. Probably just not "Prelude looking" as the previous Preludes with long noses and short rear decks.

I guess I don't associate "handsome" with "powerful and athletic". Grandmas think their 10 year old grandsons are handsome. Mustang isn't handsome, it's badass. Handsome is the same as cute but for people who enforce gender norms.

@05XR8 proves my point which was also posted on page 1. The Prelude is the only athletic-looking coupe Honda has ever made because although it was FWD it looked like a rwd sports car. Until now, that is.

Well, in my dreamland, PD, I mean, Honda(damn too many similarities) coulda shoulda made it look like the previous Preludes. That would have brought back the spirit of the S2000 in a Prelude package.

Honda were just lazy. They could go the TLX route to create space between the front axle and the doors but nope, they decided to use to Civic as base.

Yeah, as Keef pointed out, it's more like the return of the MX-6.... but, I'd say an MX-6 with a DC5 rear.
Eugh. Any car that "looks good in black" is just proof that it doesn't really look very good. If it doesn't look good til it's hidden it doesn't look good.

Honestly, I was saying the C8 was horrible until I saw it in the metal. Maybe I’ll get to see one. If it’s sold in the UK could be possible it’ll sell here. Thing is, Honda Australia dealerships only sell a handful of cars: Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V and ZR-V. A low selling Prelude doesn’t register in the line up.

It's almost there, but I just can't help but wonder why they went with that front. It's quite deviating from the rest of the lineup and it has been said before that it came from a Toyota

I was expecting at least a little bit of retro design but I'm not seeing anything. All the previous generations, except perhaps the 4th gen was evolutionary design and they all looked nice and athletic.

I guess the only thing “retro” is the wordings on the rear badge and the logo of the model itself

Specifications are up

Engine

  • Maximum Power: 104 kW (141 PS) at 6,000 rpm
  • Maximum Torque: 182 N·m (18.6 kgf·m) at 4,500 rpm

Electric Motor

  • Maximum Output: 135 kW (184 PS) at 5,000–6,000 rpm
  • Maximum Torque: 315 N·m (32.1 kgf·m) at 0–2,000 rpm

  • Fuel Consumption Rate (WLTC Mode): 23.6 km/L (Front-Wheel Drive, FF)

So exactly the same powertrain as my CR-V. It's totally adequate (even fun, I love driving my CR-V) for a daily driver type car, but I don't think it's great for a sporty car and here's why: The battery is very small and as a result the car only has the full electric motor power/torque from a stop or low speeds and only for 1-2 mins. If you are hustling a car around a fun road, you're going to be leaning entirely on the 140hp gas motor producing electricity in real time for the electric motor, which means you're only getting <140hp, whatever the spec on the electric motor is. The absolute worst scenario for this powertrain is a long, sustained, highway climb. I've taken my car up into the Sierra mountains and it is utterly gutless above 60mph on an incline. The gas motor is basically WOT to make it up.

Not sure how it’s going to work here in Australia. In Japan, the YEN price is around $64,000 USD. A CTR is damn near $80,000 AUD. If the Prelude is the same price as the CTR, can’t see it doing any good. Should have just been given the Type R engine and transmission.

Who’s even buying this car?

200hp fwd coupe with a cvt. No one cares about this. It should have the drivetrain straight out of Civic Type R imo.

It's not really a CVT. It's basically an electric car except the engine provides the electricity instead of a large battery*. In my opinion its a great powertrain (incredibly smooth unless the ICE is working very hard, gobs of low end torque), but not for a sporty car. But I'm not really sure the Prelude is meant to be all that sporty either...at least not all of them. Maybe they'll give us a Prelude SH with the Type R or SI powertrain.

*In very limited circumstances the engine can directly drive the wheels, but 95% of the time it's functioning purely as a generator

Maybe it's just me but the more I look at the pictures and videos of this car, the more I dislike it. The proportions just don't seem right to me. The front looks a bit weird, the rear seems off....I can't quite pinpoint it and I just don't find it particularly good to look at. I'll wait to see it in person but as of right now, I'm not a fan...the specs also seems controversial from what I've seen on YouTube reviews so far.
