I agree most civics are built to be an economy car call them family cars if you want - throw some money at one and it will be far from an economy car.

I've seen an eg6 with a k20 swap charge past an evo 8! thats a stock k20 - now dont tell me an evo 8 is a lawn mower

And the EG6 weighs over 1300 lbs LESS than the Evo 8.

Civic's can be fast, but other platforms have more potentiol, like an MR2 Spyder, or a Miata. Buying an MR2 Sypder is cheap (8 grand), 2zz-ge in it for 1500 bucks, and you suddenly have a 180-200HP 2200 lb car that will eat 10 grand Civics for breakfast.

I don't have a problem with FWD - I've raced it, and it works really well. The predictable response, etc, is nice. However, much beyond 200HP in a FWD car is pointless below 3rd gear really. Physics simply limits the effectiveness of a FWD drive as a true sports car. FR lets you get on the gas sooner and harder, and MR lets you do that and get on the brakes later and harder as well.

But telling this guy he should tweak out his EX Civic is not right. The money spent making that thing fast would buy him a much faster car to start with, even if a bit older.

Yeah, I think all of you guys are right in the sense that you can make a civic half way descently fast, and maybe it isnt a sports car. But, right now i dont even have the money to buy a MR2 or anything else right now, and I only paid out $2500 for the Civic. To me though, I wouldnt waste my money on a $100,000 car, I could care less for that much, I'd rather make a cool Toyota Supra with massive amounts of power then a Ferrari. My civics gonna get new paint and maybe a spoiler, and some add on stuff, nothing special, but itll make it look nice to drive around, then maybe I'll sell it and buy something else. part of the point of this is to have a "starter car" something i can learn in, oh and to remind you I dont even have a job, and I payed for my first car, and I still am young and stupid, and have alot to learn.

You can make anything a fast car, I mean I could throw an LS2 in the Blazer and it would be fast...well kind of fast.

It still doesn't make it a sports car. In my opinion vehicles shouldn't be made into something they aren't, I've done that before and it's foolish. If you want a sporty Civic don't buy the economy version, buy the sportier version to begin with.

The sportier versions often have very little seperating it from the base less sportier models. often the only differences are small cosmetic tweaks and a slightly more powerful engine. So if your going to make a slow car fast, youll be swapping the engine anyway.

And spoilers and paint are probably the last thing i would think about doing on a car that i want to make fast :(

And bigger brakes, and aluminum suspension, and removed sound deadening, and a so on and so forth.

The difference between a Type R EK and a normal EK hatch is more than just a B16...

Very true, I was going to bring the same thing up. When you buy the Type R you are getting the race prepped version of the car.

And sway bars, more supportive seats, better steering wheel. (some of that is for cosmetics, but they do make a difference in driver feel and control.

EDIT: There's also some chassis stiffening thrown in.

And they take out the air conditioning/stereo, and also a lot of the insulation for weight reduction.

If i read correctly i said sportier not top of the line sportiest version. The si, which is readily available in the states unlike the typeR (which this guy is NOT going to be getting.. he has the EX) is hardly a hardcore tuned sports car. Especially in comparison to the base model, which apart from the engine and small tweaks are almost the same car but looks better on paper.

Im not going to argue the point, feel free to pick at it though.

Don't fix up the body, you are 15 going on 16...you will crash you car.

Statistically a large majority of new drivers get into an accident either at or not at fault because of the gross lack of experience due to the terrible drivers education system in America.

I'm willing to bet he does just by the way he is talking.

And by this, Joey means the talk about street racing, etc.

Almost everyone under the age of 20 is involved in a crash at some point or another, their fault or not. As Joey said, they simply lack experience due to how absurdly terrible our driver's education system is.

I'm with Joey on this one, just keep it a POS box... smartest thing I ever did with my Tercel :p Though the window tint I installed myself was a nice learning experience and kept sunburns down :dopey:

And to add to that the dumbest thing I did was modify the Blazer while I was so young. It wasn't my first vehicle but it was the first vehicle I had for any length of time. Just drive a beater to begin with, figure out the whole driving experience, and when you are 20-21 and your insurance goes down get something a little nicer.

Yeah, I got the MR2 when I was 19... and I almost killed myself in it a few times because of stupidity. This was with a season of autocross behind me and some 70,000 miles of driving. Going to the track very quickly humbles you, especially autocross or circuit of some sort.
