Like many of you, I had just lived through a weekend of pure racing sim ecstasy, 5 years in the making. It wasn't perfect, and there were things that made me scratch my head, but I woke up at 6:30am on Sunday just to continue the fun. So, to say I was enjoying the game is putting it mildly. I was in love.

Fast forward to Monday night.

It started off great, as I Gold License test A-7. Yay! 3 more to go. (Before every session of play, I try for 30 minutes to gold another license.)

Then, I look for something else to try out. An experience I'm sure we can all relate to. And... the nightmare begins. A three headed perfect storm of validation for every criticism, complaint, nitpick, and argument against the game.

The Storm Begins:

Sport Truck Challenge: What the hell was PD thinking? Really. That is the first thought that crossed my mind the second, (the second!) the race started. Did they intentionally create a race to showcase every single graphical flaw in Gran Turismo 5? Is there a truck that looks good? If there is I didn't see it. And to say I was disappointed in what they did to Laguna Seca is to put it mildly.

I won the race and had to stop myself from selling my F150 Lightning out of pure spite. My B-Spec guy will need it though... great, another tour of this horror show.

The Eye of the Storm:

Top gear Intermediate Challenge:

Okay. I get it. I'm going to get a bunch of, "What, you thought that was hard?" from the normal crew. No big deal. I hate it when people give videogame credentials to support an argument, but in this case I think its relevant.

I'm no great racer. I admit that. But, I'm no novice either. Despite many curses and slammed controllers (and later wheels) I golded many, not all, but many, of the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue licenses. And, we all know there were some pretty brutal tests in the A and S stages. My point is that I'm not unused to the frustration, and eventual redemption, to be found in some of GT's harder challenges.

But, this was just ridiculous. For one, it feels totally ridiculous. Are they making tires out of ice nowadays? Was I not informed of this breakthrough? And, to top it off, the Lotus just looks horrible. It's a premium that looks just plain bad and it is a kick in the groin to top off the brutal, pointless, beatdown that this challenge hands out.

The Storm Subsides:

WRC challenge beginner stage:

Sweaty from frustration and shaking with disappointment, I go in search of something, anything, that will restore my faith in what PD was trying to do with this project. A mouthful of clean fresh driving enjoyment to wash out the bitter pill I was just forced to swallow.

I give the Rally Challenge a shot.

Probably not the best idea. But, in Gran Turismo 5's defense, I did, eventually, manage to tune my Civic to the point that it was at least fun to compete in the race.

I don't know what the point of all this was, it's probably more for my own therapy than anything else, but I was left thinking, pretty much throughout the night, that I had just seen what the critics were talking about. The underside; the jagged, silly, confusing, underbelly, of an otherwise beautiful game.

What I'm looking for now is suggestions. I have to go back and see if I can improve on my Bronze in the rally challenge (I won't be going back to the Top Gear Test track anytime soon. Forgive my language, but F* that!) But does anyone have any races or challenges that they think exemplify the beauty of the game. Anything that stands out and made them say "Wow! Now I know what the fuss is all about!"

I need something to make me fall in love with the game again.

**Update**

Okay. Update.

My faith has been restored. I really do think a large part of why I had such a horrible time the night before last was the one two punch provided by the Sports Truck Challenge, and then the horrid Top Gear Intermediate challenge. Both of those events are, so far, in my experience, the low points of the game. To do them both back to back was just asking for trouble.

This isn't to excuse PD though, as the mere fact that those two challenges are in the game is confusing and bizarre to me.

Last night, however, was different.

First off, I completed the Beginners Rally Challenge. A side effect of which was that it made me tune my '97 Civic to the eyeballs, and that has turned into my pet project, and it a flat out blast to drive. The event itself, after you get the hand of it, is a lot of fun too.

Then, on the advice of some posters in this thread, I decided to give the AMG challenge a shot. Score. This is why I bought GT5. Pure driving enjoyment. Fun, exciting, beautiful, challenging (without being moronic *cough* Top Gear *cough*). I didn't go crazy and kill myself to get golds, I settled for silvers, and that was enough for me at the time.

Then, to top it off, after all the money collected from the events, I had enough to finally race modify my '70 Dodge Challenger. Amazing. Mind blowing. Spectacular. Pick your adjective. I couldn't take the smile off my face with a chisel.

I'm sure there will be more disappointments in the future, but at least now I have something, a couple of things actually, to fall back on and help snap me back to reality when I run across another Sports Truck challenge.

An enjoyable read, even if the issues you are writing about isn't very enjoyable :scared:

Go drive the gullwing in nurburgring full... just for fun in arcade mode.

AMG Level 18 challenge, ring in the rain.

That was an OMG moment for the awesomeness of the game. Not as nerve wracking as you'd think either.

Your main issue is that you're not a very good racer. That's hardly polyphony's fault...

Good to know. Maybe if he improves his racing abilities those trucks in the Sport Truck Challenge will start to look a whole lot better........

McLaren F1 Stealth @Nür, sunny, THAT my friend is scary !!!

Unfortunately - no there is no such thing that makes you fall in love again with the game again - I was hoping for something like that too, but as I progress through GT5 the disappointing thins about it keep accumulating.
There are no really enjoyable race events and because of the level system it is not possible to compete in the races you want. - But no, not only because of the level system, also because of the lack of cars, for some races you need cars that can only be found in the "uses cars" slot - but you usually have to wait for them, ore have great luck (an money at the right time) - also when it comes to buying race cars you will probably have some lack of money ... they cost so much and at races you earn so little...

Some races are not event possible to finish (as the last race of the NASCAR championship) because "AI" is crashing my car all the time so I get last one in the race....

Level system in B-Spec - especially at higher levels you have to do races several times, to reach the next Level that is needed for the following races.

For the Top Gear challenge, i can only say practice and don't brake full pedal to the metal, same with throttle. Would you drive this 111R like that in real life? No, so you don't do it here too.

The car is very short wheel based and very easy to spin in real life too. If you brake and corner whilst braking (wich is btw what this intermediate test is all about), always put a little percentage off throttle on, so the rear has some artificial grip too, and once you understand that, silver is easy, but gold is another hand pair (on simulation). Keep practicing!!!

Ridiculously frustrating.

As I seemed totally incapable of using the throttle in anything but a totally straightline I'd have to rely on later breaking to sneak past the enemy lotus'.. problem with approaching a fast moving cluster of Lotus', hoping to out-brake them, is when they break ssssoooooooooo far out that it catches me unaware and unable to avoid, leading to DSQ after DSQ - THEN to pour acid into an open wound, when running side by side along the straighter sections, the enemy started punting me wide, off track or into the red cones.

I lost my rag with it in the end and turned on the skid force driving aid, got P2 on the next go and ****** it off to play a different challenge.

I don't mind it being difficult, and I'm no stranger to spending hours and hours
looking to knock those final hundredths off to get a gold or set the fastest lap... but TG Lotus challenge is one of the least enjoyable experiences ever in GT, a total exercise in futility.. it made the samba bus challenge seem like a night of passion with Cheryl Cole.

there why always be whiner.....one groups says "ohh it';s too easy" another says "this is too hard".....

can't please everyone and whiners will always exist

Lol nice read! There are many good things to do, when you are Grand Frustrated like:
Kart
Championships
Clubmancup with a totally overpowered car.
AMG driving school
The world tour (or was it Italy?)in the special event was one of my favourite
Or just make awesome photos from your Cars.

Related to the Top Gear challenge, I used an Elise on the same track in the British Lightweight race last night, and the handling was completely different. In fact, it was actually fun, although I wondered why the challenge was so different. I did have all the aids off, including ABS. I did, however, turn on the racing line for that track, especially since the AI took out many of the cones in the first lap.

If I get annoyed with some of the stuff and still want to play, I'll generally pick a favorite car, go to practice mode and choose a track--typically the weather/time change Nurburgring--and just drive it for a bit.

It's called the Grand Tour if I'm not mistaken. And oh my god, this was one of the most frustrating challenges for me. It took me nearly two hours to gold the first one with the 8C around Eiger Nordwand. I thought it was impossible to get under 1:17 for awhile until I got it down to a 1:17.2 and then I just kept grinding it. The worst part was the Toscana auto-generated track in the Murcielago. You thought the Elise was bad, you have to drive this car at speed like the tires are only an inch wide!

I did thoroughly enjoy the AMG Driving School, though. The Sebastien Loeb Rally challenge was also very enjoyable. I thought rallying was fun as hell in GT4, but this takes it a notch further. The K route of Eiger Nordwand specifically. I think it's the first time I've felt dizzy in a game, looking out at the track ahead as you're climbing toward the hairy downhill part. Not having to drive on the ragged edge all the time made these two a lot more enjoyable than the other challenges.

The Elise in the challenge has Comfort:Medium tires equipped if I'm not mistaken. You probably had a better compound equipped when you did the other race.

I guess your complaint is about the graphics and the difficulty of some of the tests? I agree on the tests and while I am trying to pass them I am pretty pissed screaming "there must be an error in programming because there is no way to pass this stupid test" then an hour later I do and I feel like The king of the world. Believe me, I hate the Lotus now. I mean I always thought they were kind of a feminine car when I saw them on the road but I thought they at least could handle!! But in the end i got good at handling a car in a slide. Coming around some of those corners pedal to the metal half sideways and not crashing? That is good experience that may save me some day from a wreck in a race that counts so I can't hate on the test too much.

Graphics will NEVER please everybody. There are some flaws but it's a video game. I mean in the rally race test last night it was pouring rain when I was getting ready to go and the second I got the green light it was sunny and clear. A mistake in programming yes but doesn't change what the game is about, driving. We can't have it all. I think e MOST important thing are the physics. I want to feel like I I'm in the car I am driving and since I can't see the car as I am driving it, graphics are second to feel.

well that's not a programming issue that is dynamic wheater 👍

Haha I remember that Lotus test, coming off the frustrating microbus test I thought "this should be fun", then I head into turn 1 backward and the nightmare starts....

Did end up winning, after resorting to use driving aids in TCS and spin grip recovery...then still after much frunstration with the AI cars either spinning you out or decided to pop into your line under braking causing you to DQ....finally did get that pesky car at Gambon and get gold for that....probably spent a good hour on that, with a lot of cursing...

Good read TK. I can relate to your pain and so can many more players as evidenced by the responses. I plan to tackle the Test Track in that little sled again tonight. The Tour event at Toscano reminded me about previous lessons learned for handling MR's - the throttle is our friend.

In spite of being really Gran Frustrated at times (nice one whoever came up with that term), the game does teach some valuable driving lessons if you can manage enough patience to stick with it. Good luck to you. :)

The worst part was the Toscana auto-generated track in the Murcielago. You thought the Elise was bad, you have to drive this car at speed like the tires are only an inch wide!

I didn't find that too bad, although the car would flick you off as soon as you lifted.

I hadn't clicked that it was an auto-generated track, although I did think it was a little silly that across most of the horizon Fireworks were going off for the whole time. I've been to San Gimignano, and I don't remember the sky being like that!

I was feeling that way about the intermediate rally challenges with my Lancer. Then I sold it and bought the WRX '05. Much easier to drive, and the moment that sealed the deal for me, was on the snow challenge when I came up over a hill and the setting sun was glaring off the snow... brilliant.

Did the same thing...felt so ashamed though to turn on some driving aids but the Elise just doesn't feel realistic to me so i thought it should be ok. :)

LOL! :dopey::) the enemy. haha. night of passion. this is hilarious :)
I totally agree btw.

I sympathize with your Lotus Top Gear challenge experience. I will never drive that license test again. I don't care what the rewards are, I don't have time in my life to be punished by a video game.

I'm having a similar falling out right now. I need to find something fun. One of my favorite cars is the STi. I had the chance to run three races with it and now it sits in the garage unused, while the game forces me to screw around with Kei cars and various FF hatchbacks. When does the fun start?

Get a Cappuccino, a great car, never mind a K-car....:D

About as much fun as can be had in a car(not Kart) under 100 bhp(or 90 for that matter). Enough to win FR cup with...:)

I do hate the fact that I NEED to get those cars to win those races though. I still need a Italian, a French and a Lupo for all those random events...

Sorry, but you are not correct about the Elise. I own one IRL. While it is easy to spin under certain circumstances, the Top Gear event is not at all accurate unless the "comfort hard" tires are some godawful tire compound concocted in automotive hell.

The Elises (mine is an S1, tuned to about 165bhp) share the fact that they are very manageable while breaking into and accelerating out of turns. Lift-off oversteer is another matter entirely and this is portrayed accurately. Lift off power in mid-turn at your own peril. :)

So, as others have noted: The Top Gear test is NOT accurate regarding how an Elise would typically drive, and this is due to PDs tire selecting being pure evil.

I hear 'ya, the top gear intermediate challenge is pretty tough. Suggestion, arcade race on the Nordschleiffe on expert difficulty in a GT-R 500, your faith in GT will be fully restored my friend :)

What really chaps my hide about this is some of the times for the gold/silver/bronze. PD really should hand out bronze like candy at Halloween because there is no reason to frustrate those who run into a problem passing a challenge. Leave the difficult gold times alone for the really dedicated players but to see a challenge (in the NASCAR special event) where the time difference between gold and bronze is .2 seconds... POINT TWO SECONDS!!!!!!!!! I really get mad. Why? I don't have a wheel so that NASCAR cone challenge (The one where you have to pass between the cones and the outer barrier) just drove me up a wall.. I was finally able to pass it but it wasn't fun at all.

The NASCAR stuff with the inside line and outside line challenge was pissing me off big time. The inside one was stupid since no one in their right mind would stick to the inside of a relatively flat oval(Indy), 90 deg corner, and not drive OUT to the wall since thats the only fast way around. But the cones are there....

Both tests took me more times than they should for me to get gold on them. I was consistently missing the gold for them by 0.001-0.003 sec....for something like 6 consectutive tries....

Nice writing style.

You should have cleansed your palate with the AMG challege at Nurburgring. I also gave up the Lotus TG challenge. It's like the put a totally untuned car in there just to punish people. And the VW Type 2 bus race before that was horrible.

But I suspect they know this but they were trying to teach us things about driving.
