Apparently used to race against 935s, Beta Montecarlos and 512BBs in endurance races back in the 70s... Not an overly competitive car, which is probably why you haven't seen that before.
 
I assume that the only "stock" bodypart left on it is the door-top form, as all the other stuff seems to be add-ons to make the car a "racer" but I cant even recall a car with such a top form... :odd:

I would have guessed the Europa too (the bodywork behind the driver would seem to indicate a midengine design).

If not the Europa, then a Lotus Elite? But I don't think they made those into the 70s...

The shape of the grill completely gave it away as a Lotus.

359, that's the german roadster based on a 3 series BMW right? Don't remember it's name though.
 
I don't know if it's based on the 3-series, but it does have the M3 motor apparently.
