After reading this, I'm not sure this is an addiction to the game per-say - having the friends and whatnot, in games, seems to be the issue now a days. I think that most people that are "addicted" to games, aren't really addicted at all, they just use games an escape from reality. The common cure for this, STAY OFFLINE for a while, you'll see how boring most games are when there's no "real" human player interaction.
With all that said, the real issue (in my opinion) is online connectivity. It's so much easier to find "friends" online than it is in real life - for some people. This isn't only for games but things like social media etc., it's ruining physical human interaction! It places people in a fake/mis-believe world that's full of rainbows and sunshine - some can't get out of it.
Escapism at its finest. I had this issue with WoW. I ended up shutting off the internet when I moved from Florida, and it took that move to make me realize I was escaping from the real world. I would spend hours and hours and hours playing. I used to be like, this is awesome. I helped some other gamer through a dungeon, level up, got that rare sword, etc. Online, you can present yourself as anybody you want to be. So I asked myself this: What have I really accomplished? I helped somebody out in a fake world.........
