So, it's simple question, but not so simple answer.

1. broken engine (play3man)
2. broken transmission (play3man)
3. Oil pressure too high (counter345)
4. Oil pressure too low (counter345)
5. Suspension failure (counter345)
6. Turbo/Supercharger destroyed (counter345)
7. Windows smashed - affects aerodynamics (counter345)
8. Brake failure or overheating (Zenith013)
9. Engine overheating and failure (Bottoz)
10. Burst tires (TomMcD)
11. Undercarriage damage (SavageEvil)

Tyres falling off due to lazy pitcrew
Engine overheating and cathing fire
Axles(or how you spell that in english) destroyed.
Exhaust destroyed
Brakes gone

There's a whole list with things that can go wrong:D

And therefore could PD make it better :D

-Oil pressure too high
-Oil pressure too low
-Suspension failure (not going into too much detail, otherwise list would be very long)
-Turbo/Supercharger destroyed

There are loads of external damages, such as;
-Spoiler falling off
-Bumpers falling off
-Windows smashed (affects aerodynamics a lot)
-Wedged wheels
-Blown tyre (too much pressure, too little pressure, too much strain)

Brake fade would be a fun addition. It could bring around an option to upgrade to carbon ceramic and teach people a bit more about extended track driving.

Everything posted here would be awesome, Sadly it won't happen PD cares too much about noobs who cant drive :(.

Engine overheating and failure.

You can't easily bolt on 2x or 3x HP and run a road course for 20 or 30 mins at a time.

I would love PD to implement the ability to have engine failures into GT5 but this type of failure should only occur in endurance type races. Engine failures could be a result of engine abuse over time from poorly maintained engines.

Or it could be due to programming such failures, and working out bugs and glitches, as well as research the parameters into engine failures and any other mechanical failures.

This stuff takes time and money unfortunately.

NASCAR Racing 2 back in 1997 had simulated engine failures. It could be done but it would need to be done so these failures wouldn't happen during every race.

Engine and radiator damage resulting in high oil temperature? Blown tires after the tires get too worn, don't know why that not even in the game, and wheels coming off, transmission damage? And maybe headlight damage and having to pit and fix damage? The Engine and radiator damage causing high oil temperature, wheels falling off/breaking off, and blown tires were in NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona for PS2. :D 👍

Edit: Tire punctures for damage too?

If there are engine and mechanical failures in the next iteration of Gran Turismo, then I really do hope that they implement safety cars, and an actual event where the pit crew brings the car into the garage and start fixing it.

Heck, remember Destruction Derby for the PS1 back in 1995. It had most of that!

Cant be very hard to research tyres going pop for getting down to the canvas, Simple really once the bar is empty 1 lap or excessive speed and pop :).

What Sierra has done with that series back in the day was revolutionary.

I still play Nascar Racing 2003 from time to time because of its in-depth complexity.

Collision detection needs to be done a little bit better Imo...Sometimes you can hit a wall 100mph and get away scott free and then two drivers do a slow bump draft and they get transmission damage.

I even once gotten a flat tire on my right front when my left rear slid into a wall. (Make sense of that one)

My vote goes for tire punctures and suspension damage if one goes off track too much, or hits the curbs at very high speeds, and also brake fatigue and the need to change brake pads during endurance races (and also upgrade to ceramics brakes, brembo, etc.)

I would be really carefull with engine damage for now.

How about intermittent electrical faults on Italian cars ( Alfas) and timing belts that snap in half the time of the stated service interval (Alfas) :grumpy:

Overheating due to extended drafting, too long and your engine blows... would be interesting, it certainly would make the game more "real".

I definitely think tyre punctures/blow outs is the main one... they have the tyre wear indicator and it affect's grip, sure, but there's no "damage" as such.

I also think the mechanical damage needs tweeked, even if you get max damage on the "engine", no specified part, it doesn't kill your speed as much as it really should.

Honestly, I just want some "race ending" faults, just to reward sensible driving and punish people who take shortcuts or drive like idiots.

Nice ideas, but with production car models you won't get race ending damage. Somewhere in those licenses PD signed to use manufacturers cars certain things cannot happen, crumpling of the A,B or C pillars(cabin compromise), cars can never stop running due to damage.

Things that should be added due to the fact that they would make sense, brake failure/overheating(would add to the mix in endurance races and well force people to warm them up before trying to use maximum braking power for high speed stops), undercarriage damage(exhaust sytems, oil pan, axles, etc.) also suspension damage should be assessed when you bottom out too much on off road jaunts, not just dirty tires. Also on the race cars and cars with applicable aero parts that can come off, they should suffer aerodynamic losses as well.

So true.

I would love to see further mechanical damage put in. Even to the point where the rev limiter is removed (optional) and the engine can be blown by over revving.

To keep the novices interested these features could always be optional.

I guess theres a complaint for everything GT5, I honestly think its an amazing game, standard, premium, who cares? When I'm going 200+ MPH at maple ring, I don't care! PD did an amazing job at making a fun sim racer, so what if the damage model isn't its best? At least it has damage!
