how close do you sit to your HDTV when playing GT5 to get a true sense of reality?

I've always heard your arms should be bent with your wrist on the wheel, not that I care how you drive. I drive much closer playing GT than driving in real life, for obvious reasons. Guys driving stock cars keep the steering wheel just about on their chest, and open wheelers sit fairly close to the wheel also.

OK, well each to their own :) I've never had any problems with comfort or car control with this rig nor real life so far. I don't know what angle my arms are when they are actually gripping the wheel, but I'd hazard a guess of around 20 - 25 degrees.

My old work mate races a Formula Ford, I think it is a mixture of having very fast turn in and cramped space to account for the steering wheel in the chest.
 
I have found if you have the screen closer than about 1.1 - 1.2 meters(4 feet) you seem to lose depth perception.
I used to sit 1.2 meters away from a 68cm crt tv, but this was killing my eyes. I use a projector now, this is very kind to my eyes and gives massive size as well.
Life size is probably achievable with a projector. At 2.25 meters from your eye, the screen size needs to be 3.67 x 2.05 meters. (this was calculated using real car measurements and applying these to measurements on the screen in the game)
I am currently sitting 1.3 meters from a 1.5 meter wide screen, this is at a eye to screen/screen width ratio of about 75% life size. I have found if you go bigger than this the position of the rear view mirror is to high and you seem to lose the effect of being inside a car.
Life size Ratio is
Eye to Screen/Screen Diagonal(16:9) = 1:1.9
Eye to Screen/Screen Width(16:9) = 1:1.6
(up to 2.25 meters from eye)

To work out how large a screen you need for a 1:1 real world scale representation of the game world, you need to know what field of vision is being drawn in the sim, then just use a right angle triangle calculation based on your distance from the screen. Here's a pretty easy to use site for that http://www.cleavebooks.co.uk/scol/calrtri.htm

For instance, if the FOV in the game was 90 degrees, and you were sitting 1.5 meters from the screen, the screen would have to be 3 meters wide to get 1:1 scale.

Its all about matching the fov in game to the angle between the screen edges and your head.

Cant wait to see how that then look running in stereographic 3d! One thing ive found with PC sims is that the cockpit seems to melt away in 3d, as you focus on the road ahead almost exclusively.

In most PC sims I've found that calculating the correct distance for your FOV usually results in me being far too close for comfort, but less FOV to compensate results in tunnel vision. So I have the FOV slightly too high for the distance I sit away, but move the seat position forward.

Thats why GT5 needs fully adjustable seat position and FOV ;)
