How close this is to real life

Droptop, you hit the nail on the Head. You have to develop a feel for controling a vehicle at these extremes. It doens't come naturally. It may come faster to some people who have like what you said "natural talent", but even then they can't do it on the first crack. I have always felt a persons abilty to drive/race depends greatly on how confident they are in thier own skills. From that point skills are developed and refined. In real life I can't afford any track time or even a car I would be comfortable starting with, but I am confident with the abilities I have. If I had the chance to do so I would not expect to start out as a great driver, but I would push myself to move forawad. In GT4I watch every replay and assess my mistakes. Sometimes even the analyzer to see if my control is fluid. No one can get better at anything without knowing what they did wrong and correcting them.

You make it sound as though drifting is some great feat. Of course, getting 'good' is something entirely different, but head to a real event and you'll see plenty of people with different ammounts of experience drifting just fine.

In my view- it's very mental; once you can understand car dynamics in your mind it's only a matter of translating that to driver input (or controller) and then you are developing a sense. As someone who can drift in GT4 and RL- I can't say that one is much harder than the other. My car gives me more feedback (and thrills) when I'm doing 3rd gear at Cali Speedway. But I still like being able to hit 95mph and not blink twice at the incoming wall in GT4.

I guess what I'm trying to say is; if you are 14 and play GT4 and have a real interest in drifting some day, you are already on the right track. It was my dream to drift for a very long time and it's been a lot of work to get to where I am right now but it was definately worth it.

I don't put it out to be seen as a great feat, but I prefer to discourage the "drifting is easy" clause I hear and see alot lately. I see that state of mind lead to alot more wrecklessness and stupidity rather then the original intent of having fun.

The feeling of the DFP wheel is very unrealistic and if you drive a real car I highly recommend not using it as it will interfere with your muscle memory.

haha. the first week i played GT4 my car was down so i didnt do much driving... then i got it back and was like WTF

anyways, while GT4 is pretty fun, i find it MUCH MUCH harder than real life driving when it comes to getting the back end out. The physicis are fairly accurate when you keep everything happy, but once you start to slide they just start to feel awkward imo. It almost feels as if they tried too hard to give the car a balance point. ive honestly given up trying to drift in gt4. GT3 is so much easier and more fun to do it in, and i honestly have tried so hard in 4, its just not worth it.

another thing ive thought about was who they had driving the cars when they did their data aquisition?
