How do PD actually record the car sounds?

This question might seem silly, but I've searched and found nothing.

Another question is, why do some cars sound generic? Of course, most cars would be accessible to PD for PD to record, surely?

I believe they just hold up a big microphone :p

Tough they probably digitally recreate a lot of the sounds

From the Merc race a few weeks ago.... I see a microphone but are those cameras? Just a guess

Well whatever they did I assure you that a V8 don't sound like a constant fart...

Considering 75% of the cars are recycled from previous GTs, it's not a big surprise.

True, but you'd think with them redoing everything else they'd maybe update the sounds...

Why is the GT40 so godly though? I swear, I would never have expected GT to have a car sound quite like that.

I mean if that sounds like THAT... I don't know. Why don't others sound so realistic sounding?

GT40 MKIV has the same engine and sounds the same. IDK I wish the rest of the cars were that beast.

That's the way it sounds in real life. In my opinion, I think some of the Group C cars sound like that in real life...?

i could be wrong but its my understaning that they record the actual car sounds, with a big fuzzy microphone. The cars don't sound right because they record the sounds with the car on a set of rollers. No load is placed on the motor. A engine at 3k rpm with no load sounds vastly different than a engine at 3k rpm at wide open throttle under a load.
I remeber reading this somewhere about GT4, weather they do that still i dont know.

The sound design in GT5 is pretty awful. It's not just the engines, which by themselves are not very good (I think they sound kind of tin cans). There are other noises that simply aren't there: wind, transmission, suspension, etc. Gt5 is too reserved, too clean.

Compare GT5 sound to a game like Shift. This is what a race car sounds like:

Blaring loud, like a real car.

True story... the engine sounds are really just lame.. all like the same.

I really mis the "BANG" when shifting gears in race cars and the growling from the le mans cars :/

The load on the engine, the transmission whine, the road noise and the wind all play a part. No matter. Many cars sound great going by at speed that just don't sound right when you're in the cockpit driving them. And some the other way around. In the car sounds better than as it's passing by.

I love the sound of the 427 Cobra starting up. There are others that are very close to the original sound at start up. It would be a very pleasant addition to have the sounds more accurately represented in the game.

A reasonable theory, but half of the premiums still sound like garbage. I remember PD bragging about how good the sound recordings were pretty much in every installment, but they've always been a few good/lots bad, and they still are.

If PD can take photos from many angles to get the 3d model right, getting the right sound should be a cinch. The problem is car sounds very different inside vs outside except in open top. The car sound insulation filters out much of the sound (some frequency more than others). When we are spectators, the doppler effect also pretty much distort the sound we hear massively so using tv recording to judge engine sound is grossly inaccurate. The tire roar and wind also pretty much mess up what we hear as drivers or spectators So I believe PD must have got the sound right for the premiums unless u have sat in one and compare the sound with what gt5 offers. So if it sounds like tin can, it probably sounds like that in real life. Can someone with the actual car inthe game tell us if ur car sounds like what the game offers?

Do most cars sound their best while in the highest rpm?

That's what we're trying to accomplish during every second of a race. Anybody try taking it easy and shift a bit earlier, then watch the replay to hear how it sounds?

My question to those disbelievers, how on earth are you able to tell whether the sound is accurate or not when you never raced in those cars???!!!!

Not quite like an angry bee, right?

Look, i'm not saying the game is perfect. However, you guys just keep proving the point I'm making, ever heard of doppler effect homeboy? besides one's a in the cock pit and the other one is chase cam. moreover, can you guarantee the were using mics with similar quality? If you ppl hate the sound effect and the graphics that much, then smash ur disc against the wall or play fetch with your dog with it or something.

Your a freaking idiot. Even the built in mic on my lap top will not make the engine of the Mercedes sound like it does in the game, from any listening position.

And the other point I've seen made is that people on here dont actually know what the cars sound like. Well let me tell you this, my Dodge Ram 1500 is in the game and it sounds nothing like it is supposed to.

Edit: Go drive some of these cars in Forza, they got it right. Or at least light years closer than GT5

sound design has always been GT's biggest downfall, and even with GT5 they haven't got it right (for the most part)

Exactly! People focus too much on the engine/exhaust tone while there is much more that generates noise on a car racing on a track (or even on the streets). The sound experience in GT5 is too much sterile.
